The Cheboygan Daily Tribune reports that a swimming advisory has been issued for City Beach in Cheboygan because bacteria levels exceed health standards
Health Department officials say that investigation into the source of the contamination is ongoing. The unusually high level of e-coli bacteria can cause illnesses or infections with children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems who come into contact with contaminated water, usually while swimming.
District Health Department No. 4 will continue to monitor the water at City Beach until it is determined safe for body contact. Until that time a sign will be posted at the beach site advising citizens that swimming is not recommended.
Two beaches at Alpena have also recently received the same swimming advisory.
