We will be in Detroit the weekend of Dec 7 for the Cowboys/Detroit game and wanted to get suggestions on things to do while in town. We will arrive on 12/7 and depart 12/10 staying at the Courtyard Downtown.

Kinda hard to give you a lot of ideas without some more infor...age kids, likes, dislikes...but I will toss out a few ideas.

Staying downtown you will have easy access to Greektown (shops restuarants, nightspots) and the Greektown casino...

If you are big sports fans you may want to check to see if the Red Wings are in town...they play at Joe Louis Arena on the waterfront.

Up Woodward Ave. is the Detroit Science Center (great for kids) and the Detroit Institute of Arts...the DIA is going through a renovation now but will have been re-opened for a couple of weeks prior to your visit...

Around Ford Field there are bars and restauarants The Elwood is right across the street...Cheli's Chili (owned by Chris Chelios of the Red WIngs) is also nearby. Of course the Hockeytown Cafe is also jsut up Woodward. Several theatres in that area as well including the magnificent Fox Theatre...they will likely be doing a Christmas themed show at that time of year.

Campus Martius is downtown...a central park area and the ice rink may be open by early December for skating...or just watching.

Use the people mover...it will take you all over the central downtown area for cheap....many convenient stops...

Do a little research online and I am sure you will find much more to fill your time....

Thanks for the great suggestions. I have been doing some research and found a dinner cruise (Princess) and a dinner train. I have sent them emails requesting info as it looks like they both may be reserved for Holiday parties that weekend.

There will be two couples in our group late 30's and early 40's so we do also plan on spending some time at the casinos!!

Also, I read about a holiday festival in Ferndale that weekend. How far is that from Downtown?

Thanks again,

I recommend Fishbones for dinner at least one night.

I would spend some time in Greektown, regardless if you're into gambling or not there is plenty to do in that area. There are some really nice restaurants, bakery's and cute little bars. Pegasus has really good Greek food and there are other places such as Fishbones, Loco Bar (mexican food) and Sweet Georgia Brown.

Last year White Chistmas was showing at the Fox Theater, I have heard that it will be playing again this year. It's a nice show, great theater and reasonably priced tickets.

There will be plenty to do, bring some warm clothes and enjoy Ford Field.

Ferndale is maybe a 15 minute drive. Easy drive straight up Woodward Ave. Astoria Bakery in Greektown is a must in my opinion.

As for the casinos I would either recommend Greektown or MGM Grand. Motor City is a bit out of the way.

Ole Shillelagh in Greektown is a fun pub with entertainment upstairs if you feel like getting silly. I've seen ages from 21 -81 here so everyone is welcome.

There will also be ice skating in Campus Martius Park in December.
