Eastern Market in December?

I am visiting Detroit December 11th through 13th, 2008. I was told a while back (when I planned to visit in warmer months) not to miss Eastern Market. Does it operate in the dead of winter outdoors or is it just for warmer months? If so, how far is the Eastern Market from Ren Cen and can one get to it by the People Mover? Thanks.

Make sure you visit the Market on the 13th. Saturday mornings are the best and you'll find the most vendors. I would say that the market is about 2 miles from the Ren Cen. There really isn't a good stop from the peoplemover. The market is a bit north and east of the Ren Cen. Will you have a car??

Thanks so much for writing. I will not have a car. I just figured out how to get from the airport to downtown via public bus. I will probably take a taxi from there to Eastern Market on the 13th, as you suggest that to be the right time to go. I also plan to take a taxi to the Motown Museum and also to the MGM Grand for the buffet and also to Slow's. I am planning to pack an awful lot of running around into a short time (smile). Again, thanks.

The Motown Museum is one of my favorite places in Detroit. Its very small and it shouldn't take that long, but its worth it. I have had Will Smith as my tour guide on a couple of occasions and he is the best! See is he is there when you visit. Slows is very good if you like BBQ. Also, try Pegasus is you like Greek food, its in greektown and finish it off with desert from Astoria Bakery!

Given the relatively short visit, the long bus ride to and from downtown to the airport and the cost of taxis (plus, finding one cruising except in the immediate downtown area), you might want to compare those costs with having a rental car. With discounts, rental car costs may be roughly comparable and the convenience superior. You also would be able to save a lot of time and see more.

Just a thought. . . obviously, it all depends upon a cost comparison and also your personal comfort level with driving in a strange city and whether you have to pay to park where you will be staying. The places you mentioned are easily driven to and street or inexpensive parking is available. The airport to downtown route is a straight shot via interstate highways.

Many thanks for all the information. I apologize for taking so long to check it out. I will certainly do my best to get to Pegasus and will check out the car rentals and assess them and parking costs versus taxi costs. Again, many thanks!

Assuming you already have car insurance at home, you can get a compact car through hotwire.com (as of today) for a total of $48.94, inclusive of taxes and fees for those days. If you'd need to also pay for CDW or whatever because you don't have existing insurance, the cost would of course increase.

It really is a shame it's sooo expensive and/or cumbersome to get from the airport to downtown Detroit. In NYC it is very easy and inexpensive to get from LGA to Manhattan via public transportation.

Eastern Market is a wonderful place in the summer, when filled with local (I include Ontario in my definition of "local") produce, plants, and foodie materials. In December, however, all the produce will be trucked in from points South, there will be no plant/flower/herb vendors, and vendors are limited to the area inside the covered sheds (in the spring/summer/fall, vendors are also outside the covered sheds.)

Depending on what you're interested in, it may not be the best use of your time. there are some great "Old Time" stores on the outskirts of the Market, as well as casual resto's, which are fun.
