Are there any areas in Detroit that should be avoided.

Unfortunately, there are lots of areas to avoid but downtown Detroit is OK, with the proviso that you pay attention to your surrounding as you should in any city. If you are a tourist or planning to visit on business, you are very unlikely to venture into any of the areas to avoid.

Post back if you have questions about specific locations.

Would it be best to stay out of Detroit and stay in Ann Arbor or Jackson.

Detroit has plenty to offer, but so do other areas. What's your purpose for visiting? It's not necessary to stay out of Detroit, but whether it's the right place for your stay just depends on what you're looking for.

Ann Arbor and Jackson may be smaller but they also have areas to avoid. Detroit's main tourist areas (Greektown and Stadium District) are fine. Neither Jackson or Ann Arbor offer a downtown like Detroit's although Ann Arbor's is fairly unique. You might consider staying in a suburb of Detroit such as Royal Oak, Troy, etc... if staying in downtown Detroit scares you. I've stayed several times downtown though and never had problems. The Hilton Garden Inn is in a good spot.

Thank you all for your time in posting replies. I was finding out information about Detroit for friends who will be visiting early next week.

Ann Arbor is at least a 45 minute drive from Downtown Detroit, and Jackson is even further. If your visit to SE Michigan is primarily to tour the Detroit area, these locations would be inconvenient to you.
