Rainy day downtown activities

Just checked the weather for friday and looks like it's gonna be rainy. We will go over to the Rencen for the tour and maybe hit the river walk shops if it's not too bad out. What else can we do downtown that is indoors? It seems the DIA is a little bit out of town? We would like to walk/use public transit and not have to the move the car until we leave detroit. Thanks!

The DIA is a bit north of downtown and it is more convenient to drive there. There is, however, a Woodward Avenue bus that will take you from downtown to the DIA. The Detroit Historical Society Museum is near the DIA as well. Otherwise, rainy day activities downtown would be mostly restaurants, bars and casinos. If not raining too hard, you could check out the downtown architecture and possibly do a tour of Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. There really aren't any shops on the River Walk, though in good weather it can be a pleasant stroll. Much of downtown Detroit is reachable via the People Mover, so you could just park the car and leave it.

The DIA would definitely be worth the trip IMO. North on Wooodward but not walking distance I'm afraid'

You could probably take a cab, though you would likely have to call for cab service when you need it. The front desk at your hotel should be able to help you with reliable cabs.

You can easily spend the better part of a day at the DIA and they have a nice cafeteria so you wouldn't have to wander far for lunch.

Definitely take a short cab ride to the DIA. It's fabulous. Great rainy day activity and the food is pretty decent there.

Is parking easy at the DIA? It looks now like it's going to rain all day friday, so we do have the option of moving the car and then just heading out of the city after.

Parking generally is not much of a problem. You have a choice of underground parking next to the museum and the lot behind the museum about a block away. As you may not be familiar with the neighborhood, here are the details re parking from the DIA website:

"Parking

Please note: Beginning June 1, 2009, we will no longer offer DAILY Valet Parking for our museum patrons and guests.

Secured self-parking is available directly behind the museum on John R Street.

Self-parking is also available at the Underground parking garage on the corner of Woodward and Farnsworth.

This lot is owned and operated by the City of Detroit. " Hours are 7 a.m. to midnight. Cost is $7 all day.

Yes, there is an underground parking structure to the south of the DIA. The library is across the street as is the Detroit Historical Museum.
