downtown dinner reservations

I'll be staying at the Westin Cadillac downtown Detroit soon for business. Any suggestions for a nice place for dinner downtown? Will it be safe to walk the downtown area with a group of women, even if just around the hotel and surrounding area for some exercise?

Thanks

It is safe, particularly since you will be in a group. Just observe the usual big city precautions. The hotel (which re-opened a year ago after extensive renovations) has Roast, which is quite good though pricey. You won't be far from Greektown with its strip of mostly Greek restaurants. It is a small but lively neighborhood and also the location of the Greektown Casino. Try Fishbones or any of the numerous Greek restaurants or the Old Shillelagh Irish pub. A short drive or taxi ride north of the Westin is the Atlas Global Bistro, one of my personal favorites. If you post back with a bit more about budget, style (pub grub, fine dining, etc.) and cuisine preferences, we can make additional recommendations.

One night there will be a small group of us, 5, who would prefer more upscale fine dining and we are fairly adventurous diners. We'll have a larger group, 8-10, for the other night and will probably want something more mid-price range but not particular about what type of food.

Thanks for your help.

FINE DINING

Wolfgang Puck’s Grille (MGM Grand)

Bourbon Steak (MGM Grand)

Roast (Westin Book Cadillac

Atlas Global Bistro

MORE CASUAL (all are in Greektown)

Pegasus

Mosaic

Fishbones

There are others as well, but this should get you started. All but Atlas are in the downtown area. Atlas is on Woodward Avenue about a mile or so north of the Fox Theatre.

The group of eight to ten may enjoy Slows, they have an eclectic beer selction and very good bbq. Its more of a causal atmosphere. You would need to cab or drive to slows.

I just discovered the Detroit Fish Market last month and I have now dined there twice. If you're a fish/seafood fan I would highly suggest the fish market. The fish Market isn't too far from the book. You could walk it or cab it.

Good suggestions, gobluegirl. I have eaten at both of those places a couple of time and enjoy them a lot. Also, for casual meals, Small Plates might be an option.
