Omni Hotel River Place to Comerica Park

Hello,

Google maps gives this journey at 45mins by foot, the pictures of the route it gives show the area as fine, do the locals on this forum consider it a safe walk for a couple of games in June? - or should I get a taxi.

I would much rather go to the game on foot & get the atmosphere along the way.

Regards

The walk along Jefferson east of I-375 may not be the best place to walk both in terms of excitement (not much there) and safety - at least at night. Once you get into the downtown area (basically west of I-375 between the river and the stadiums) you are fine and there is plenty to do.

If you wanted to walk your best bet would be to take the riverwalk to the Ren Cen. From there you can walk north on Beaubien or Brush and run into some good places to stop for food or drink. Many of the bars in that strip run shuttles to the game, so if you don't feel like walking any more you can get a free ride (just tip the driver).

I have not done the river walk yet, so others may be able to comment on it more. Here is their website: http://www.detroitriverfront.org/east/

I also noticed google maps had an issue placing the Omni. Make sure you are getting the right routing from 1000 River Place, right on the river.

I stayed at the Omni last Aug. and I enjoyed it. The service with a smile, right on the riverfront, old nastalgic building, cozy hotel.

I would use the Riverwalk right out the hotels back door. It leads in into Hart Plaza /Cobo Arena. In Aug. there was a detour of sorts(5 blocks) which made pedestrians walk 1 block north from the riverfront and then it went back to the riverwalk. OK,Detroit a big city with higher unemployment and for me it wouldn't be a surprise if someone asked you for some change or a cigarette just simply say no if you don't want to be bothered. Beware of your surroundings as you would be in any other big city.

I recall the hotel has a shuttle van to take you in the city if you want. I didn't use it so I don't know much about it - I suppose it is quite simple and only a 5 minute ride. Detroit has a lot of nice things to see but it has grown into a metro area beyond downtown and mid town I suggest renting a car to explore the area.

finnmann,

I am obliged for the information regarding the hotel. I'll only be in Detroit for 3 nights and my main purpose is to see a couple of Tigers games, so I'll kick around the downtown / greektown / midtown during the day, I'm sure I'll be pleasantly surprised by the city.

Thanks again.

That's a walk I'd avoid. Absolutely no charm from a visitor standpoint. Dicely mix of population.

I agree with JimmyK... I wouldn't walk. I would take the hotel up on the shuttle service or hire a cab. This is not a walking town... and the area immediately to the east of downtown... not so hot.

If you like art - while you are here - check out the Detroit Institute of Arts.. wonderful place..... and when time gets closer... we can recommend places to eat.

"...my main purpose is to see a couple of Tigers games..."

If that's the case there are other hotel choices that would put you much closer to Comerica and the activities related to the Tiger games.

The Atheneum, the Greektown Casino Hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn or even the Holiday Inn Express would be good choices.
