What to do in Detroit

My husband and I and some friends from Europe are visiting Detroit for the Motor Show Jan 16-19. We plan to see the show one day and the guys will go again the second day. What is there for us girls to do (shopping) in downtown Detroit while our husbands are drooling over cars? Also, is the Auto show worth seeing? We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Washington Street. Thanks!

Shopping is pretty much non-existent in downtown Detroit. You need to get to the suburbs for the good shopping, and a rental car is really necessary for that.

If you like to gamble, there are three downtown casinos. The riverfront and Greektown are fun areas to wander around, but it may be very cold - but is supposed to be 52 today so who knows. The people mover can get you around if you don't feel like walking.

Auto show is really a personal choice. I've never been a car buff so I couldn't care less except if I am looking for a new car, but others love it.

I agree with Tev, the Auto Show is a personal choice. I’m not into cars so I could care less, however my Father never misses it.

I’m not sure if you’re into the Art or Motown, but the DIA and Motown Museum would give you something to do. The Motown Museum is fairly small and would only take up about an hour of your day. Right now the DIA had a Rembrandt Exhibit. If you do make it to the DIA I would suggest Good Girls Go to Paris. They have the best crepes around.

The Auto Show is usually a pretty glitzy production, and even non-car buffs could probably find it interesting, but a few hours would probably suffice. I can't think of too many things to do on a cold January day in downtown Detroit to keep women entertained. I think the Detroit Institute of Arts might be the best place to while away the day.

Some general comments on the show's "worthiness" ......

If you are a car enthusiast you need to go at least once in your lifetime .... Many people go every year.

The show should be better in 2012, as several manufacturers, Porsche being one, are returning after a 3 year absence.

The manufacturer's literally spend tens of millions of dollars (each) on the show.

If you can, go during the week as the crowds are smaller (100,000+ attend daily on weekend days)

Other ideas not mentioned above, include: Greenfield Village / Henry Ford Museum.

Touring the auto barion estates would probably be more fun in the Spring/Summer, but ...

If you girls really want to shop (instead of looking at cars ;) Somerset Mall in Troy is the premo mall in the area.

I would add Pewabic Pottery if you're interested in classic arts and crafts style functional ceramics (incredible tiles, mugs, vases, etc.) which has been in production since the early 20th century. There is also a free tour of the art deco style Guardian Building downtown which is really interesting. I haven't been to the newly expanded art museum at Cranbrook, but it is at the top of my list for places to visit.

The auto show is worthwhile in my opinion...and I agree the DIA is definitely one of the best destinations downtown. Hit the 'burbs to shop.

I have just returned from Detroit, and as a girl who loves shopping I would agree with regajohn and tev9999- hire a car and go to Somerset collection in Troy. It has more than enough shops to keep you entertained. It only takes about half an hour to drive there, and we were told on many occasions that it is the best mall around. There really isn't any shopping to be done in downtown Detroit. I did love the city though, but would recommend a car to get around.
