2 full days in Detroit over easter in 2013.

Hi, My husband and I are flying into Detroit on Good Friday 2013 from Australia..

We will have 2 full days there before catching the train to Chicago on the Monday morning.

Just wondering what would be a good itinerary so that we can see as much of the town in this short time. We really want to see what Detroit is all about - fallen factories and neighbourhoods etc.

Also accommodation - any good recommendations.

Anyy advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

If you're looking to stay downtown, I would suggest either the Westin Book Cadillac or the Riverfront Marriott in the Ren Cen.

A visit to the Henry Ford Village & Museum (The Henry Ford) will provide you with a great history of the auto industry as well as Detroit. Also, the DIA and Motown Museum are fun to visit. For dining, try a restaurant in both Greektown and Mexicantown while you're here.

Here is an old thread covering the "Urban Exploring" of a previous visitor.

Also search for some of the more recent "what should I do" threads in the Detroit forum for the good and lively parts of Detroit.

This short video was recently put up by a young entrepreneur who has a great, hopeful vision for the future of Detroit, honoring the innovators of the past, but not being totally naive about the city's current condition.

His company is Loveland Technologies:

I think travelers and residents are missing the boat if they come to Detroit looking for a narrow definition of what the city is and don't see what it is becoming. It is a unique city at a unique period in its history.

I believe all the entrepreneurial energy finding its way to Detroit is going to do amazing things in the coming decade(s).

If you do go out to The Henry Ford, take a couple hours for the Arab American National Museum--beautiful, interesting, unique museum only a couple miles from The Henry Ford.

And another TA thread about urban exploration in Detroit:

I'm also linking a previous thread I shared on TA that has a bunch of links to recent documentaries about Detroit in case you're interested in learning a bit about the city before you come:

So you'll have 2 days, one of which will be Easter Sunday when FYI many places will be closed or have modified service-- restaurants in particular.

If you'll be arriving by air but leaving by train, how will you get from the airport into Detroit-- it's far and transportation options are limited and mostly expensive. The train station is in Detroit, at the junction of Midtown and New Center. Will you have a rental car to get around while you're here? Sadly Detroit public transit leaves much to be desired, and is nearly non-existent on weekends, especially Sundays.

In addition to hotels you might want to consider airbnb.com lodgings in part as a way to meet locals with great city knowledge. Also Hostel Detroit has a couple private doubles and a knowledgeable staff.

I think Detroit is about urban-explored out, though sadly the story of why has yet to be told-- amazing that filmmakers keep coming here, missing the obvious and getting it all wrong. Anyway if you want the latest info on what's going on (and not) with buildings, you'll want to follow these pages--

Update on ongoing restoration work (and heightened efforts to keep trespassers out) at Michigan Central Station--

If Griffin and Knibbe (slide 16) have been retained, this is a serious effort.

I don't buy it for one second. Election day is coming up and Moroun is trying to get the new international crossing blocked by a ballot proposal. This is nothing more than Detroit's biggest slumlord trying to make himself look a little better to voters before election day.

From the article:

"

According to the DIBC, vandals keep finding new ways to break into the secured building despite area patrols by the Detroit Police Department, Border Patrol and railroad police."

Why would Border Patrol care about this building? Railroad police should not care about anything other than the tracks that run along side (if they are even still in use). It is private property - hire your own security if you really want to keep vandals out. DPD has better things to worry about.

I disagree.

The changes to that neighborhood (Slow's and all the other new bars/restaurants/B&B/Pony Ride and related) have made that building far more valuable and potentially very profitable. I think it's all about the $$$

I strongly doubt most voters are even aware the Maroun family owns both Michigan Central Station and the Bridge. And I don't recall that the ads (which I ignore, admittedly) even make any reference at all to MCC.

I'm a huge fan of the Detroit Institute of Arts. I travel all over the country and go to many museums, specifically art destinations. This place while smaller than some other major metropolitan art museums has one of the most eclectic and diverse art collections around. The collection might even seem crowded to people who expect places like NYC's Met or MoMA, but the artwork there is significant and stunning. Exploring the DIA can take up more than a good day there and there's even the Detroit Film Theater that one can catch a great art film there.

Midtown Detroit has had a huge resurgence the last few years and is starting to hop again. For special lodging, I'd even consider staying at the Inns on Ferry- they're great little Victorian mansions with individual little rooms. They have a great breakfast and is within a block of the DIA.

A friend just rented the 2 bedroom apartment above Slow's BBQ to throw an evening party and it was really nice. It would make a good base for exploring Detroit. They charge based on whether you want to use 1 or 2 of the bedrooms (but do not rent out the extra room if you're only using 1 bedroom). There is no flexibility about refunds if you cancel though so you have to be sure of plans before booking.

Honor and Folly:

Another young, entrepreneurial friend just attended an invitation only Google event that was meant to bring attention to the opportunities in Detroit for young entrepreneurs from around the country. It was held in that open area right by the MCS (is that a named park? Not sure.) and there was a lot of buzz about the potential for that building and that area in general.
