Safe Area for Girls Weekend

Hi there! Myself and some friends are considering Detroit for a girls weekend, and we'd like to stay downtown if possible, but are more concerned about things to do/safety/etc. Can anyone give suggestions on which area of Detroit you'd stay if you were on a trip like this? We will probably do some shopping, will want to check out a Tigers game, and a couple bars.

Thanks!

I will give you a hotel suggestion. This is more like an cozy inn.

Inn on Ferry Street. Loved our stay there this past Spring. Check it out! They have a shuttle that will take you anywhere within 5 miles of the place. This would include Tiger games, the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts, but you could walk there), plenty of restaurants and bars. Shopping-will you have a car? Let us know!

Downtown can cover everything but the shopping - there is very little retail downtown. Greektown Casino would be my first recomendation for a hotel and base of operations. There are plenty of bars and restaurants right outside their door. The casino also has free parking, and you really need a car to get around Detroit.

Somerset Mall in Troy is the fancy mall in town. It is about a 30 minute drive from Downtown. There is also outlet shopping at Great Lakes Crossing farther north on I-75. I'm not into shopping, so can't be much more specific there.

I agree with tev9999 - stay at Greektown Casino and Hotel. The hotel is fairly new and is very safe for female travelers. I've stayed there with a group of girls and we felt totally fine staying there. There's restaurants and bars on site, as well as within the Greektown area surrounding the hotel / casino. Comerica Park and Ford Field, as well as the Detroit Opera House and Fox Theatre are all within walking distance.

You will need a car to get to any shopping. Somerset Collection in Troy is the best and Great Lakes Crossing is a HUGE outlet center that always has great deals. It's about a forty-five minute drive from downtown.

We have stayed at The Atheneum in Greektown and really liked it. Check out their website. http://www.atheneumsuites.com/

We were there for a concert at Tiger Stadium and it is an easy walk. People Mover Station is right there also.
