Suggestions for a 2-day itinerary in Detroit area?

Hi,

My dad and I will be in Detroit for 2 days this August as part of a 5-city baseball stadium trek. I think I've figured out the best things to do in the area, just hoping for suggestions on how to piece it all together. Some info:

Day 1 --> we're driving up from Cincy (about 4 hrs to Detroit)

Day 2 --> we have Tigers vs Yanks tix for a night game @ 7:05 PM

Lodging --> Motorcity Casino is already booked (via Hotwire) for both nights

Looks like the best attractions to see during the day are the Henry Ford Museum / Greenfield Village / Motown Museum.

1) Is it too ambitious to hit all 3 with the time we have? If I had to pick one between Henry Ford / Greenfield, which one should I pick? (can't skip Motown, my dad's a huge music buff)

Was thinking of the following:

Day 1 --> leave Cincy early, get to either Henry Ford / Greenfield by noon

Day 2 --> try to hit both Motown and whatever's left over from Henry Ford / Greenfield, then Tigers game at night

* Day 3, we head to Toronto early, but might be able to squeeze in Motown in the AM if that makes more sense

2) Since MotorCity Casino Is our home base, can we walk to downtown / is it advisable? There is a shuttle to Comerica, but only 1/2 hour before / after game, not enough time to grab dinner near park, etc. Should we drive into downtown instead...where should we park?

3) Restaurants --> looks like the best are in Greektown, but are there other gems close to Comerica, Henry Ford Museum, or practical to Motorcity Casino location (in case we don't drive into downtown) that anyone could recommend?

Thanks in advance!

The Motown Museum is very small and the tour takes about 40 – 45 minutes. You’re not free to roam the museum but can linger and ask some questions to the guide and hang out in the gift shop. The Motown Museum is one of my favorite places in Detroit; I got every few years just to be reminded of the greatness that came out of Motown.

I would suggest doing the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village before the 7:08 game time. That gives you a decent amount of time to explore. The museum & Village opens at 9:30. I believe they have buy 1, get 1 half off on tickets right now.

Motor City to Comerica is about a mile. I personally wouldn’t do that walk, but perhaps others can give you advice on walking. There is plenty of parking lots all around the stadium that range from $10 - $25. I have never found parking to be an issue. You could always park in Greektown; there is a parking garage at the Casino and lot in that area. The bars and restaurants in the Greektown area will run shuttles to and from the stadium. I don’t find it a long walk from GReektown to the stadium, but I have used the shuttle from Fishbones when I have had my parents with me.

I’m not sure what kind of cuisine you like, but since you have a car I would suggest Giovannis for Italian (not downtown but in the city limits), Supino Pizza in Easter Market (very small location, but the best pizza in Detroit), Los Galanes or Armando’s in Mexicantown, Slows is a great restaurant with great BBQ & Beer choices (always packed though). The mercury bar is across from Slows and had good burgers.

I’m sure others will be able to help & respond too. Let us know if you have any more questions.

I wouldn't walk from Motor City to Comerica Park, but I also wouldn't go through the hassle of driving / parking when I'm so close. My advice is to take a cab to the more central downtown area from Motor City for dinner before the game, then walk to Comerica Park from there. The walk from the Greektown area to Comerica Park is very safe and very short. What you're going to spend on parking you can just spend on a cab to Greektown and not have to deal with the hassle. Sure, you can park your car in the Greektown structure, however, on game / event days they typically charge $20 for parking if you're not a Club Greektown member.

I agee on gobluegirl's revised itinerary suggesstions. After a visit to the Motown Musuem on day one, you could always stop at the Detroit Institute of Arts that afternoon, or head to the RiverWalk along the Detroit River (if the weather permits).

Gobluegirl's restaurant suggestions are great as well. As she says, Slow's while good, can be quite busy and not worth the hour wait (sometimes longer on game days). As an alternative, Red Smoke BBQ in Greektown is just as good and doesn't seem to get as busy as Slow's. Other options in Greektown would be Pizza Papalis and Santorini (Greek). My favorite restaurant downtown is Vicente (Cuban) and is a very close walk to Comerica Park.

Dearborn is the largest Arabic population in the US, and any restaurant with "shish" or "pita" in its name will be great.

If it's raining, do THF museum. Otherwise the Village. Depending on your interests, you can get both in...if you're a fan of shiny paint jobs on original artifacts, your visit will take longer.
