What happened to Boatwerks?

I've been by a couple of times and it appeared closed. A friend said there was some problem with permits? Is it closed? For good?

Rono,

Don't know what happened , but this note was on their website.

"Good news, we are back!

We are intending on a re-opening on Wednesday, September 12th. Call 392-2958 or 396-0600 if you have any questions.

Here is another article.

Update: Boatwerks to open no later than Wednesday

Updated: 9/7/2007 7:22:15 PM

Holland – WZZM 13 has learned the Boatwerks restaurant will open no later than Wednesday. The word comes days after the restaurant closed abruptly on Monday leaving the 100 or so employees out of work.

One member of the Holland city council called the Boatwerks restaurant closing a "public relations nightmare."

"We want that restaurant open," says Holland mayor pro-tem Craig Rich. "We hope someone has the good sense to say let's open that restaurant."

Boatwerks owner Joe Walsh presented city administrators with a proposed agreement that could lead to reopening the restaurant during a four-hour negotiating session Tuesday.

Council reviewed the proposal Wednesday night behind closed doors.

The city was not threatening to close the restaurant, but was withholding a permanent occupancy permit over site plan violations and failure to provide public access to the restaurant board walk.

"I think it has really become a kind of tug of war between both sides and we as employees are stuck in the middle," says server Shawna Groendal.

Wow! So it's a red tape thing? What's this public boardwalk thing?

If I understand correctly it all has to do with public walk way. The city of Holland did a whole lot of improvements to the park around the restaurant property. They built a beautiful boardwalk along Lake Mac. The boardwalk circles the lake sides of the restaurant. The owner of the restaurant installed a gate on the walkway, which he kept locked. This prohibited the public from walking the boardwalk around the restaurant. This made the city POed and they would not grant him some type of permit. So the owner may have done some type of attention stunt, to close the restuarant by saying that the city forced him too. Apparently the city of Holland and said owner have come to some type of agreement about the walkway and some other issues to do with parking. So the restaurant will reopen.

Doggy is correct. My impression is that the owner dug his heels in and instead of negotiating with the city (which never threatened to close the place) he closed up to get attention.
