Is the lake too cold for swimming?

We're thinking of visiting in August. Are there swimming beaches? Is the lake warm enough for swimming? Thanks.

The "beaches" on the island are all rock, so you need water shoes. You can swim almost anywhere. Most of the island is park land so there is lots public access and the water is crystal clear, but cold. My kids swim all the time. My husband and I don't - we're "Wimpy" according to the kids =). If it is a really hot day, you can pay (about $10 per person) and swim in the Grand Hotel pool.

Illeagal to swim in the waters surrounding Mackinac Island? That is by far the most absurd thing I've ever heard in Trip Advisor Forums. Swimming is great on the island and in no way off limits. Now, the currents on the South side of the island are very strong, so I certainly wouldn't swim there...but along the North shore...awesome...go for it...find yourself a nice secluded stretch and have a ball!

According to this pdf mackinacisland.org/pdfs/mackinacislandlocato… from the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau swimming "in the Straits of Mackinac" is free, swim shoes required, no lifeguard on duty, swim at own risk.

Whether the water is warm enough is completely dependent on your cold tolerance but most people I've met from Florida would not be able to handle it. Still, you never know until you try!

When we were going to the Island on May 24th and you could see the sandy beach on the west side of the Island. You have to go clockwise around the Island to find the sand. It wouldn't be Michigan without sand. LOL
