Fourth of July on Mackinac Island

Going to Mackinac Island in less then two weeks for the Fourth of July. I heard it is kind of crazy. Does anyone have any advice for us?

The Island is busy on the 4th, but no more than every day from mid July until mid August.

Rent a bicycle and get away from downtown. Plan your in town time in the early morning and evening when most of the day trippers are gone.

I agree with LHL2. Ride a bike around the island, or better yet, hike along the East and West Bluffs and see some beautiful vistas (and cottages). Walk up to Ft. Holmes, Point Lookout, Sugar Loaf and Arch Rock.

Morning and evening are my favorite times on the island.

Be sure to pick up a free map from the Tourism Bureau kiosk downtown. The State Parks Visitors Center across from Marquette Park sells a great guide with a list of self-guided tours for a dollar.

Get out of town and enjoy what most visitors never see!

Agreeing. Stay away from town during the day. Get out and around the island. It's a different place after the last ferry leaves in the evening. But it's the unofficial start of the summer season. Expect it to be busy. Bring some patience. Don't be in a hurry for anything.

Thank you so much for the advice. I am excited, but a little nervous too. We will be traveling with 6 children.

Whoa. Six children. You'll have your hands full but at least you won't worry about them darting into fast moving traffic.

That said, be alert for bikes and horses when walking, don't walk in the road, etc.

Try flying kites at Windermere Point or on the great lawn at Mission Point.

The library has a surprisingly good kids section and a wonderful view and is next to Windermere Point.

You can do Duckpin Bowling at the Woods Restaurant.

If they're old enough, take the Crows Nest trail (behind the Indian Dormitory & playground) up to Anne's Tablet Trail and you'll find a couple of great views of the harbor and downtown.

We like to wear everyone down with lots of walking and hiking each day!

At the back of the library, there a quite spot with a deck, chairs and a large green space for the children to play, with Round Island and passing boats in the near distance.
