The hotels are very expensive. You may want to stay in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace.

The fare for the ferries is slightly lower if you purchace it online.

There is a nice park below Fort Mackinac for a picnic. If you don't want to carry the food all morning, buy the supplies at Dowd's Market, next to the park.

Many people rent bicycles and ride around the Island shoreline. If you do not want to pay to rent, you can do a short walk along the shore from the east side of the town to Arch Rock, or it is only about 7.5 miles all the way around. If you do walk, don't take a short cut back from British Landing, It is hilly and the walk around the shore is easier.

One of my favorite free activities is sitting on the lawn behind the library, where you have a great view of the lighthouses and boats.

All of the fudge shops offer free samples.

Pontiac Lodge is the most reasonable hotel on the island. Granted, it is nothing fancy but clean, safe lodging.

Funny how some threads do not get closed after 6 months, but since this one is still here. This site lists a bunch of savings on getting to and enjoying Mackinac Island: travellingassassin.com/2013/…

Since the thread is still going - we have found one of the best deals on the island to be the Island House. It is close to the ferry and they have bed and breakfast packages that also include ferry tickets. The Island House breakfast is a full buffet, which means you can fill up in the morning, take an extra piece of fruit with you for lunch (or do a hotdog from their cart in front of the hotel), and then maybe spend a bit more on dinner. Everything on the island is fairly expensive, including breakfast. By the time you add up what we would spend by staying somewhere else, we always end up back at the Island House. One tip - rather than renting bikes from the hotel, walk across the street and to the left a bit. There is a small rental place that has the best rates on the island.
