Overnight stay on our way to mackinac island from chicago

I would like to break my trip to mackinac island while driving from Chicago. We will be a family of 10 people mostly adults. Any recommendations as to which would be the best place to spend a day at.

if your group enjoys the great outdoors, i suggest making an overnite stop at sleeping bear dunes:

it's not halfway by any means (about 3 hours from mack via the scenic coastal route, and about 5-6 hours from chicago), but it's worth checking out nonetheless.... if you leave mackinaw early, you can be at SBD by noon and enjoy what the park has to offer for the remainder of the day.....

if the beachtown scene is more your speed, about the halfway mark is ludington... you can watch the ss badger ferry arrive/depart the harbor, which is always fun to watch... there is some nice stuff to do in the downtown area, along with enjoying a world class beach, but the downtown is somewhat spread out and not really on the harbor.... but, towns with a more compact downtown and harbor scene, with a lot of activity going on would be grand haven, saugatuck, south haven and st joseph further to the south, and manistee and maybe frankfort, located between SBD and ludington..... if you'd like to do some dune riding, consider silver lake dunes state park....

We spent a night in Saugatuck, which has some interesting stores and restaurants and a great beach. It's a little on the Chicago side of halfway.

What we did is spend a couple of hours in both South Haven and Saugatuck, and then spent the night in Grand Rapids. We didn't get to the hotel until bedtime.

Relax with a beer or two in grand rapids (micro brew capital of the u.s.). Also the meijer gardens are worth a look! Grand rapids is only a few hours from Chicago and mackinaw so it would be the perfect spot to stop imo and would offer a decent Drive home the next day.

I'll second Grand Rapids since it is close to halfways timewise after you get out of Chicago and has plenty to see.

But if you want a more scenic route, take the drive along Lake Michigan with the Pentwater area as your halfway point.

When we first started going up to Mackinaw 10 years ago, we always stayed overnight in Traverse City. TC has lots to do and then you can drive up the coast through Charleviox - beautiful and relaxing drive.
