Who to get there WITHOUT a car

(Should read HOW TO GET THERE)

I live in London. I want to say in the grand Hotel, Mackinac Island - but do not want to drive. Is that possible.

If I can't get there myself are there any tours that stop there?

welp, you're gonna have to fly a major international airline into one of the hubs in the area, most likely detroit or ORD... from there, you'll have to connect to an airport in northern michigan, probably pellston, which is about a half hour drive/taxi ride up to mackinaw city. there might be a shuttle from pellston to mack city---the locals in this forum might know better.... from there, you'll have to take one of the ferries out to the island..... no cars on the island. i strongly recommend renting a bicycle for at least 1 day while you're on the island.....

if you have the resources (i suspect you do, since the grand hotel is crazy expensive), you could possibly charter an air taxi out of pellston, or even detroit and fly directly to mack island.... it ain't gonna be cheap, but it'll cut some travel time.....

As mentioned, Pellston is the closest airport that has shuttle service. Traverse City (TVC) also has shuttle capabilities, but is farther away and probably more expensive. They do offer a few more flight options.

Greyhound/Indian Trails (greyhound.com) do offer bus service from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City all the way to Detroit. You could fly into Detroit (DTW), Flint (FNT), or Midland/Bay City/Saginaw (MBS) - take a taxi to the bus station, and then the bus the rest of the way. It is a loooooong ride though - nine hours from Detroit, whereas you can drive in about five hours.

Another option might be to fly to Sault Ste Marie Ontario (YAM) via Toronto. www.saultairport.com/groundtransportation.php You could probably take a taxi across the border, then take an hour ride on Greyhound to St. Ignace or Mackinaw City. Looks like there is a Bridge Bus also that might work for you. michigan.gov/documents/MDOT_2005_Bridge_Bus_…

Driving is by far the best way to get around Michigan. If you can manage it, I would highly recommend getting a car.

There are tours that include Mackinac Island. Many of them are in the fall, but others are in the summer or spring.

http://whitestartours.com has three packages

www.diamondtours.com/mackinac-island-bus-tour is primarily for groups, but they have a "join a tour" option.

Great Lakes Air offers charter service to Mac Isle. from several origins ... from Pelston (PLN) it is pretty cheap.

Also, check a recent series Re. getting to Mac. Isle. (Within the last 4 days) on this forum.
