4x4 in Etosha with Family

I'm planning a 5 to 7 day trip in Etosha with my wife and 3 kids towards the end of June. I was thinking of renting a 4x4 in Windhoek with 2 sleeping tents on the roof, and then driving up there and either put up camp 'in the middle of nowhere' or near one of the NP camps.

Does anyone maybe have any helpful tips as to where to rent the cars, what to look out for, and camping in the Etosha in general.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks in advance!!!

If you want to camp inside Etosha then it has to be at either Okaukuejo, Halali or Namutoni. At end of June you can just about get away with not pre booking campsites, but of course if you arrive and then there is not space then you have a substantial problem. Campsites are numbered an allocated so if they are full, then they are full.

You can't just pull up and camp where ever you like.

Depending on the age of the children you might find 3 in one rooftop tent is going to be quite a squeeze.

Most rental companies offer camping equipped vehicles. Try Camel Car Hire, Gecko Car Rental, Advanced Car Hire, Okavango Car Hire, Caprivi Car Hire.

bg, as mentioned by Gemma, camping is restricted in the park to designated areas. I personally would never go and take a chance of not getting a spot. It is too easy to make a quick reservation. Just one less thing to worry about. That's just me though

AS others.

<<put up camp 'in the middle of nowhere' >> A fine recipe for getting arrested and escorted out of the park. Actually I don't think you would get in the gate without them checking your reservation for Camping. You certainly would not get out again.

Re the shortage of space that Gemma refers to. Some of these vehicles have a bed in the truck body too. We actually slept in there on one trip as we could not be bothered to put the tent up each night and take it down for Game drives in the morning.

Unless your children are age about 8yrs and younger I don't think there is much chance of getting 3 kids in one roof top tent! You may be better off getting only 1 roof top tent and 1 ground tent or just one family sized ground tent.
