Trekking around Luang Namtha - clothes to bring and agencies

Hi there,

I will be in Luang Namtha around 15.01.2013.

I want to hike a little bit around, for 2 or 3 days in a moderate difficulty degree. I'm happy to go into the jungle and to visit some waterfalls.

My questions are:

1) How low and how high do the temperatures get ?

2) Is it windy ? do I have to bring a windproof jacket ?

3) Should I bring a waterproof jacket ?

4) Are hiking boats adequate ?

5) Should I ware long sleve shirts and pants ?

and finally

6) Can you recommend trustworthy agencies that organize this hikes ?

Thanks a lot !

1 - In Jan the night time temps can get to about 6-10 deg. Daytime after the sun is well up (10am onwards) it is warm.

2- no not windy - very rarely.

3 - no - it is the dry season, the chances of a shower are small.

4 - yes hiking boots are fine - lightweight ones better.

5 - yes but not too heavy for daytime - if walking you wil soon warm up.

6 - there are quite a few - see this previous thread

I loved Forest Retreat as a trekking agency in LNT. Check out their TripAdvisor reviews: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g424933-d2…

I agree that light hikers, or maybe even running shoes if you're younger are better than full on heavy hiking boots. I brought some great boots, but got tired of lugging them around when I wasn't trekking and they were too hot to wear on a daily basis.

I second bruce, and recommend Forrest Retreat as well. Run by two lovely kiwis and they also give you great advise for the surrounding areas. The trekking can be difficult on some treks, so mention to them what kind of difficulty level you want to do.

Two girls I met later on my journey were also absolute happy with Green Discovery, but I didn't use them
