I have read several reports about the number of fake products in Nepal. Most worrying is that of water purification products. Does anyone know anything about this?

Fake purifiers is not something I've come across (knowingly) - Lugol's solution or tablets are so cheap there might not be any money in it. I guess western branded products could be faked for profit - the likes of Aquamira are a similar price to home (the UK at least) so if in doubt maybe buy at home.

49 helpful votes Chlorine dioxide is more effective than chlorine. Water purification can be more complicated than it may appear.

I was using "chlorine" loosely.

49 helpful votes I was using "chlorine dioxide" specifically.
I stand corrected.
Yes...readers of this thread be careful. Chlorine does not kill the giardia virus as I found to my cost back in '87 when I limped back to Pokhara 1 day into my trek with severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea brought on by this illness. The sulphurous burps followed me home all through China too. Here's hoping I make it this time.. more than a quarter of a century later. Apart from the very expensive 'steri pen', is there any particular brand or type recommended. I'm presuming some type of iodine treatment is best but haven't yet started looking into this

49 helpful votes Hi Indie-Brindie
Maybe take some tinadazole this time?
There are a number of ways to get safe drinking water. FWIW, I take chemicals (chlorine dioxide and sometimes iodine tablets bought in Nepal, no longer available in the EU for water purification), a drinkSafe filter (either a bottle or in-line water bladder one) and buy boiled water from the lodges. Sometimes I don't trust this (on a hunch mainly, sometimes if I've seen dodgy practices) and use chemicals or the filter as well.
I have not used a steri-pen; reports of bulb failure, high battery consumption put me off but there are plenty of adherents and reviews seem better now.
Good luck.

Thanks . This is a useful post and I can't see what I'd objectionable about it. One question though. What is the reason for cipro, tinidazole and amoxicilian tablets? Do they each cure or prevent something different?
