Pheriche vs. Dingboche

Hi there!

What is the reason that some itineraries going to the EBC via Pheriche and some via Dingboche. What are the pros and cons of each route? Looking at the map, it seems that at the end of the Pheriche route, there is a steeper ascend than the Dingboche route. Another reason I can imagine that there are more accomodation options/infrastructure in Pheriche?

What is the truth?

There are really not big differences between Pheriche and Dingboche. Both places are on about the same altitude and similar views of Himalayan peaks. Pheriche is a bit in the corner with a bit less views comparing to Dingboche. There are not big route differences on these two places, you will have very short walking difference between these places. If you stay in Dingboche then you will have better views of Himalayan peaks and a bit easier route comparing to Pheriche. I personally recommend you to stay in Dingboche.

Both places has numbers of accommodation options, no need to worry about!

I've found the route via Dingboche much more pleasant. After the junction of the paths to the two villages the Dingboche route goes immediately up, quite steeply, but not for very long, whereas the Pheriche route seems to go up almost as much. On the next rekking day the walk from Dingboche to Dughla is a delightful terrace, with great views. Shortly before reaching Dughla you'll see the route from Pheriche struggling up to meet you.

Dingboche is the larger village.

Also from Dingboche there's a very pleasant acclimatisation walk (and you'll probably need to take an acclimatisation day at either Pheriche or Dingboche)eastwards along the foot of the great wall of Nuptse South Face
