Bus Service from Colombo airport to Trincomalee

Hi Sri Lanka experts,

1) I was wondering if you could recommend any air-conditioned bus service (route, frequency and rates) that runs to and fro Colombo Airport and Trincomalee (where is the bus stop in Trincomalee).

2) Is there also a bus service/shuttle that goes to the city centre - route, frequency/rates?

3) What about local bus service for Trincomalee district and its surroundings.

Lonely planet's getting there and around does not include info on companies servicing the routes for example, so would appreciate some company names if you have them...

Thanks very much in advance for your infos...

Hi there,

I strongly doubt there is a direct one. Possibly from Negombo and then following a more northern route (A'Pura - Habarana), and if that's not there for sure Colombo-Trinco like the LP guide also mentions. Trinco bus station is in the town centre, as is usual in Lanka a few blocks away from the railway station.

Plenty of local buses in the Trinco area, don't worry.

All the best,

If you don't want the hassle, a car and driver will set you back about $150 each way and saves a lot of hassle, partic is you're short of time or have a lot of luggage

And loose lots of money or even your health IF things go wrong. The Helitours/Airforce flight has no commercial airline license, which means almost all travel insurances drop the cover for all 'around' the flight. E.g. a dropped camera or lost bag at Trinco airport means no insurance cover, same for any medical accidents...

Tnx anyway,

-why does an air force pilot flying an air force plane need a commercial airline license?a commercial license is required to fly a commercial plane.

-the SLAF has an impeccable record on safe transport aircraft flights.

-as the flt reaches trinco in the morn 0800 u have the entire day ahead of you which you would have wasted in travelling 7 hrs by road.

-as far as luggage is concerned it isnt a complicated check in procedure like commercial flights.ur luggage is 'under your nose' all the time. And where else in the world can you have the honour of an air force pilot flying you????

- finally B positive.whatever will be will be.Que sera sera.the number of people having died in road accidents is far larger than those in flight accidents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im not campaigning for the flight as the road journey is nice too.but it is an option to be considered. And if ur a DE its time u take the flight before offering pearls of wisdom

I would definitely fly with them. Is their terminal near the commercial terminal in Colombo?

Maybe an unwise statement here, Erik was simply stating that any travel insurance would be invalid in the event of a mishap, either to body, health or property, this is because ALL flights under such insurance , HAVE to be at least covered by a commercial airline license, maybe a good time to remind you that this is essentially a MILITARY owned and operated flight !

As far as i am concerned, very wise advice from Erik, but of course it is up to individual choice..

JaneB,

International flights arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport which is approx. 32 km north of Colombo City.

SLAF flights depart from Ratmalana Airport which is approx. 17 km south of Colombo City.
