Restaurant reservations needed for Jan1-4???

Hi,

Our visit up North is almost here and I was wondering if we should make restaurant reservations now before we get there. We'll be arriving on New Year's afternoon, and will most likely be watching the Rose Bowl, so are there any suggestions for good carry-out that might be open on New Year's Day?

We're not exactly sure of our schedule, other than skiing half of the day. We're going to baby our knees and not take it too hard. It would be better if we could make the reservations as we go, but if it's packed, I hate to miss out on some of the fine dining that deadheadcouple shared a few months ago when I started to plan this!

How's the snow up there? We're close to 50 down here in Cincinnati-land.

Hey BB,

Glad to hear you're coming up! The snow's great right now...we have had a couple of feet, but it's been in the mid 30's the last couple of days, so it's starting to compact a bit. The skiing should be great while you're here.

Where are you staying? Where you are might dictate where you go for takeout for the bowl game. What are you looking for? Pizza, Subs, bar type food?

How long are you staying for and what did you have in mind for fine dining? I wouldn't think it will be too busy the first few days after New Years, but you might just call ahead to make sure they're not booked with private parties or anything.

Hi, DHC!

Glad to hear that there will be a good base and conditions for us. We are actually going to be close to 60 over the next couple of days, so I need to gear up for some colder weather.

We ended up staying at the Inn at Bay Harbor Renaissance because of availability, price, type of room we were looking for, etc. From reading the recent reviews, it sounds like they have stepped up their service level quite a bit (now rated #1 for Petosky!). We even got an e-mail asking us about what specific things did we want for our room. I'll report back on the experience when we get back.

For the take-out for the Rose Bowl, we would prefer pizza or other ethnic (Asian, Greek, Mexican, Italian) cuisines vs bar-type food. I saw that there was a Greek place named Mim's in Petosky, but again for that evening we might have to take our chances on what is open. As for fine dining, the on-line menus and reviews of Whitecaps and the City Park Grill sound wonderful. It's been quite a few years since we've been up that way, but we always enjoyed The Pier in Harbor Springs too.

We'll arrive on NY Day in the afternoon and will be heading back to Paw Paw on Friday after a 3 night stay. I suspect this will be more of a eating/shopping/sight seeing trip with a little bit of skiing thrown in for good measure instead of one that has skiing as a main focus.

Another question - we'll bring our boots with us, but will be needing skis - any good rental places, or just stick with the ones at the resorts?

That's it. We're looking forward to it and appreciate all of your suggestions. Happy Holidays!

I'll be interested to see how things go for you at Bay Harbor. It's no secret that BH isn't exactly my favorite development, but I have to say, we had dinner in Latitudes a while back and it was very good. Hopefully, BH management's getting back on track and offering a product worthy of the price. I hope things go well for you!

Unfortunately, Mim's isn't open on New Year's day (and it's on the other side of town). But here are a few that will be open.

HuNan is right at the intersection of 31 and 131 and is my favorite Chineese in Petoskey (or anywhere else for that matter). They're open until 9:00...try the Cleopatra Chicken!

Mighty Fine Pizza is my favorite in town...I think they'll deliver as far out as Bay Harbor.

The only Italian in town is the Villa Ristorante, which is great, but closed on NYD. You're as far out as Bay Harbor, so Giuseppe's in Charlevoix might be a solution...they're right on 31 a bit before town. They're open on NYD and offer take out.

Thai Orchid is a very good new Thai joint right downtown. They're not open New Year's day, but this might be somewhere to keep in mind for lunch one day.

For your fine dining, Whitecaps is good, but I think overpriced for the fare. City Park is great, and have a good wine list. My favorite in town is the H.O. Rose Room in the Perry Hotel. If you liked the Pier, you'll love the rose room...it's run by Staffords too, the dining room is recently re-done, food and service are top notch and the view is second to none. Hands down, my favorite fine dining in Petoskey. Also worth mentioning (though I hate to promote the casino) is Sage at the new Odowa Casino Resort...high end, expensive and very, very good.

You might check out ski rentals at the Bahnhoff in Petoskey (right on 31) but for the minimal price difference, the convenience of renting at the hill seems a better bet.

Hope this helps BB...Happy Holidays, have a blast up here, I know you will!!

DHC,

Thanks again - you always provide incredible info! I'll report in on the hotel and other happenings from our trip. Sounds like with all the good places to eat that there are many other options to Whitecaps.

Rono, good to hear from you too. I can't wait to hit both SW and NW MI this trip up. We leave the day after Christmas and come back on 1/7.

If either of you need any info on the Cincinnati area or on some locations in Europe, let me know. I'd love to return the help!

Have a Happy Holiday/Winter Solstice, and a very Merry Christmas!

ps - Do you get a notice that a reply is posted anymore? I haven't on this and some other Forums. Must be the new TA format.

Hey BB,

How was your trip up north? We've had some really warm weather the last few days, and a lot of rain. Too bad, as we've lost almost all our snow. Hope you guys had a great time, I'd love to hear all about it!

Happy NY, DHC!

Sorry, it's been busy since we got back. I posted a review of the Inn (great stay!) and The Pier (mixed bag) already. I was trying to get the other restaurants done before I wrote up my trip report here, but ran out of time. I'll try to finish them off this weekend.

Net, we had a great time and enjoyed the snow before it got warm. Your restaurant recos were spot on and greatly appreciated. I'll try to get into more details this weekend, but thanks again for all the suggestions.
