Questions for Cherry Festival

Greetings!

I'm planning on taking my wife up to Chicago for July 4th, then driving up for a few more in Traverse City to see the Cherry Festival, but I had a couple questions.

I know this is possibly the biggest week of the year for Traverse City tourists. Are there any hotels in Traverse City that are walking distance to all of the Cherry Festival attractions? We'd really like to park and walk everywhere. Is this possible?

Second, I am a beer geek and there is a wonderful brewery called Short's in the town of Bellaire. About how far is the drive up to Bellaire?

Thank you!

Bellaire is about a 45-50 minute drive from Traverse City. There are a couple microbreweries in Traverse also. Mackinaw Brewing and North Peak Brewing, both on Front Street.

You might want to try the Holiday Inn, it is right in the middle of everything, more or less. Easy walks downtown, the marina, the festival grounds and good viewing for the Blue Angels (not sure they will be here next year, as they come every other year), and fireworks. They have a bar set up outside I believe, and they have watercraft rentals, if interested.

I second Tyme's suggestion for the Holiday Inn...it's a great location, reasonably priced and right on the water. You might also check out the Park Place Hotel...right in town, more of an historic hotel.

Make your reservations now though, as cherry festival is not possibly the biggest week in TC, it's absolutely hands down the

You should definitely swing over to Bellaire and Shorts!! As a fellow beer geek, I can tell you for certain that North Peak and Grand Traverse don't hold a candle to Shorts. Bellaire's becoming a cool little town, with Short's, a couple cool restaurants and a nice Inn. It's becoming the place for TC people to go for a night to get out of TC. Stone Water Inn is right in town, you might consider heading over for dinner, beers and stay there. I live Northeast of Bellaire so I always come from the opposite direction of TC, but I sure can't imagine it taking 45 minutes.

Hello chemmie,

Friends always stay at the Park Place and love it. We have normally stayed at the Grand Traverse Resort, but it is not in the heart of Grand Traverse.

Not sure how much time you have, but a drive north along Lake Michigan is spectactular. The scenery looking down into the water is beautiful. We have driven this to Cross Village, where there is a very unique restaurant and landmark, Leg's Inn (www.legsinn.com) It is probably a two hour trip from TC.

I stumbled upon this while I was reading about your question about Prague. I am planning a trip and wondered about going from there to Krakow. Did you enjoy your trip and do you have any good tips?

Thanks!

Hi chemmie,

One more option to consider for lodging is the Bayshore, which is one block east of the Holiday Inn. It is within walking distance although a little further "out" from the center of town. I haven't stayed there in years but it is newer than both the Holiday Inn and Park Place. Also (and this could be a plus or minus, depending), it is completely non-smoking.

By the way, the Blue Angels performed at the 2008 Cherry Festival so they are not due back until 2010 so, sorry, you will miss out this year although they do try to find some other air show performers on the Blue Angels' "off years."

Have a good time! See you at the Beer Tent!

Park Place Hotel, Holiday Inn and Bayshore are your best bets for walking distance to downtown acitivities, restaurants and bars. Park Place is in the center of downtown, 2 blocks from the bay. As for your beer interest, we have a newer brew pub in town, Right Brain Brewery. It really is great. There sell no food there, just great beers, but they do allow you to bring your own or have appetizers delivered. Enjoy and have a great time here.
