When you say on the lake do you mean Lake Michigan? You won’t find any chain hotels on the lake in that area. You really would be hard pressed to find any chain hotel anywhere along the west coast that is on Lake Michigan. There are a few that may have a view of the Great Lake but that’s about it.

Like Kilarney said, there aren't any hotels on the big lake. You can, however, find some nice B and B's. White Lake is a pretty lake itself, and the town has a very nice small town feel, so staying on White Lake could be an option. More details on what you're looking for would help.

thanks, I wanted a place with a pool for a couple of days that had nice amenities. We are dropping off one kid for camp, but we still wanted to spend a little time exploring the area with our other elementary age child. Swimming, fishing, hiking, or area amusements.

If you're set on Muskegon, the Shoreline Inn (http://www.shorelineinn.com/) is on the east end of Muskegon Lake, which gives you good access to the Whitehall area (and Blue Lake, if that's where you're dropping off your child). The Holiday Inn (holidayinn.com/hotels/…hoteldetail) is downtown, but not right on the lake. Keep in mind that Muskegon Lake is not a swimming lake, but the big lake is only a few minutes away with very nice beaches.

Close by is Michigan's Adventure (http://www.miadventure.com/) and Double JJ Resort (http://www.doublejj.com/). Both are nice; check out their websites. Double JJ offers a western-themed experience with varying rooms / condos to stay in. Less than 30 minutes north is Silver Lake, where you can rent jeeps or dune buggies and drive on the sand dunes out to Lake Michigan and get basic motel accommodations.

Hopefully this will help you with your decisions.

Muskegon has a WWII Submarine you can tour. It’s pretty cool.

While Michillinda lodge is not a chain hotel it is right on Lake Michigan in Whitehall. It also has a heated outdoor pool and lots of other activities on the grounds.

I don’t know if you will have bikes but this is a good biking trail in the area

As topfan mentioned the Silver Lake area would be a great place to stay as well.

www.michigan.org is great website to find things to do in that area.

thanks, good info

All of your replies have been very helpful to understanding what is in the area, and interesting things to see. The submarine sounds good and the descriptions do help me narrow down our choices.
