North Shore Drive/Place to Stay

We are staying for one night in this area and was wondering where are little expensive clean places to stay and if there are any must sees in the area? Also has anyone been to Tom's logging camp and is it worth seeing?

I was going to drive to Duluth and then from then go up towards Split Rock Lighthouse and Two Harbors. Tom's Logging Camp is supposed to be alittle north of Duluth.

Where will you be starting - I am afraid you may be biting off a lot of driving.

Depends if you like things of nature or things built by man. The Glensheen Mansion is a historical place in Duluth. Tours given regularly. There was even a movie made in part of the Glensheen starring Patty Duke and called "You'll Like My Mother". the Glensheen is right on the way out of Duluth... watch for the signs, it is there before you know it. http://www.d.umn.edu/glen/

Two murders also took place at the Glensheen in 1977.

There are several stops going up the north shore that are gorgeous. Gooseberry Falls is one place to stop. Nice interpretive center there and a beautiful waterfall. The walking paths are very easy to navigate in any kind of weather. Split Rock is worth a stop.

Tettegouche Park is another stop to make which is just a little north of Split Rock. Park for free and then walk towards Lake Superior. Take a short trail to your right and it will lead you right down to the lake shore.

Thank you for your info. I didn't know that 2 murders took place there. Where do you have to park that you can park for free? We are going to drive to Duluth on Wednesday night and stay overnight. Then spend the whole day on Thursday exploring the area, staying overnight in that area again on Thursday. Then spend part of the day on Friday before going back to MSP.

Glensheen was the site of the murders of heiress Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse, Velma Pietila, on June 27, 1977. Roger Caldwell, the second husband of Congdon's adopted daughter, Marjorie, was charged with the crimes, convicted on two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to two life sentences. Marjorie was charged with aiding and abetting and conspiracy to commit murder, but she was acquitted on all charges.

When you turn into the Tettegouchee Park entrance (from Hwy 61) there will be immediately be two huge parking lots. Free parking. Walk on the sidewalk towards the lake and then veer to your right and continue and it will take you right down to the water's edge and give you some wonderful photo ops along the way.

If I were you I'd leave early morning and drive up the North Shore, highway 61 and take in all the sights. (Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock LIghthouse, Tettegouchee) Take your time. A good place to eat is right out of Two Harbors. It's called Betty's Pies but they have a decent menu. http://www.bettyspies.com/aboutUs.jsp

Then on Friday morning, get to the Glensheen for their first tour at 9:30. The standard tour is an hour and you can roam outside to your heart's content. The expanded tour is 90 minutes and takes you to the 3rd floor (where part of the movie was filmed).

Then head on back south but stop first at Canal Park. The Maritime Museum is free and open from 10 a.m. til 9 p.m.

Walk out towards the pier and you might be able to see a ship arrive or depart using the lift bridge to get through the harbor. Check this out to find out the times ships are scheduled to be there:

There are some great places to eat around Canal Park also.

No, not really. I was looking at the Red Roof Spirit Inn in Duluth, but I am not sure about that. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate it. Is it easy to get to Ely? I hear about the Boundary Lakes Canoe area, but I am not sure if that is just if you are canoeing or if I go up towards Grand Marias if that is considered the Boundary Lakes Canoe area???? Thank you.
