Which casino is the best?

Hi everyone,

I am in Minneapolis visiting my bestfriend. I live in NYC but let me tell you that I love Minneapolis. It's so beautiful and the people are so nice! I digress :-)

Which casino do y'all recomend? Which has the best atmosphere? Which is the biggest? From my research it seems like its between Mystic Lake or Treasure Island. I want to take my bestfriend there for his birthday. That is his request.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Anna

I like Treasure Island better, because they serve alcohol -- sober gambling doesn't appeal to me ;)

Both are about the same size now IIRC. Mystic used to be a lot bigger, but TI recently put in some new additions.

Atmosphere-wise, they're both about the same. Mystic tends to attract more retirees and lower-income people because they run a free shuttle service, but they're both pretty typical bigger Native casinos.

Anna,

I started writing some on my thoughts and then really came to the point of thinking it's almost a coin toss (or chip toss?) TI has alcohol and has their nightclub area so it probably attracts somewhat a younger crowd, though Mystic is relatively closer to the city and has done its own recent renovations, to include a center live music platform in the middle of the casino and an extensive food court. Mystic is probably somewhat bigger too, though that is counting its hotel and meeting space, plus big bingo area.

Unless you find some pressing reason to go to one over the other (i.e. alcohol availability at TI), you probably won't go wrong either way. Frankly, since neither ever close if you go to one and hate it, it's not impossible to go to the other one (though Google Maps indicates about 1 1/2 hour drive since it's not Interstates to travel upon).

Mystic & Treasure are your two best bets.

Mystic is dry / no booze served, and you are even not to bring your own to the hotel if you are staying there.

If the booze is not an issue, also look at their entertainment schedules - see what's playing that you might like.

Consider booking a room, and also a massage at the spa. We did that at Mystic and really enjoyed it.

Both have considerable buffets, too.

Running Aces is only 30 minutes north of the Twin Cities and they have poker, black jack, live horse racing, and very few machines. They have a large bar as well. Not huge but, NO SMOKING in the whole casino which makes it my #1 pick! Also, it is new and very nice inside.

Wow, not even bring your own alcohol to the hotel if staying there? I can understand the casino, being Native American, making the choice to not serve it, but to start instituting rules such as that on guests seems harsh, even realizing it's their hotel and they can choose the rules such as these. It's then up to the paying guest to decide what they want/will live with.

That said, the ideas suggested about entertainment schedules and that both have decent buffets are good points.

Mystic Lake and TI all both ok, never have any luck at either! If you want to do an overnight short 2 hour roadtrip west of the cities in Morton, MN I highly recommend Jackpot Junction. I went there for a weekend last summer and really enjoyed it. Not as crowded as the city casinos, but very nice accomodations, good food and a free band played in the lounge with great music for dancing. They also have big name acts there throughout the year. Check it out at www.jackpotjunction.com It's a great short getaway.

Or take a nice drive up to Mille Lacs...Grand Casino...Just about 85 miles north of Minneapolis metro...they have a special on rooms for $59 a nite...nice rooms, too...ask for a Lake view...they have good food in the Grill or in the speciality restaurant...or just down the road is Garrison and the Blue Goose Restaurant with nightly entertainment, drinks and good food. Lots of slots, poker and black jack. Fun to get out of the city and be around the lakes area...

We did bring our own to Mystic - consumed in the room - and brought in INSIDE the luggage, not an obvious rolling cooler.

They are pretty strict, and there are signs on the hotel floors as well as in the rooms.

We were discreet, and made sure no bottle tops or empties were in the trash. We carried all that out with us. We made sure it was out of view so the maid couldn't see it when the room was made up.

Even though we are realtively close to TI we actually prefer to drive to the Grand Casino at Hinckley.

But between TI and Mystic one other difference is the relatively larger on-smoking area at TI. Incase that's an issue. On alcohol TI does not serve it at machines but does have bars on the casino floor. As does Grand-Hinckley.

But Mystic has much better dining options. One thing I can't fathom from TI's recent expansion, including adding bowling, was omitting a decent Steakhouse type restaurant. The coffee shop place they have is pretty bad. Mystic has Ribbons Steakhouse although if I am going to enjoy a good steak I like it with a beer or glass of wine. Which boils down to why we go to Hinckley...it has The Winds Steakhouse and they serve beer & wine (and liquor too).
