What to do/where to stay in Minneapolis, St. Paul area?

My boyfriend and I will be travelling to MInneapolis/St. Paul in early September for 3 days. We have never been, and would like advice on where to stay in the downtown area within walking distance to bars and restaurants, and other points of interest. Thank you!!

Downtown Minneapolis

What days are you here?

Ages?

Food interests?

Drinkers?

So much to see and do.

We will be there from Wed to Saturday morning. We are in our late twenties and like to try new foods and we do drink on vacation!

I would stay downtown Minneapolis. The Mariott is the only hotel I have stayed in downtown and it is nice. As far as where to go, check out the discussion about "old school joints I should have a drink at." Very good options there. For late 20's (my age range) I would really recommend northeast for food and drink alike (see my post in the discussion noted above). Unfortunately there really aren't any hotels in northeast, but a cab from downtown to northeast is $15 max. There are fun bars in Minneapolis too, but Northeast is just classic.

If your a fan of Diners, Drive-ins, and dives check out this site as well...http://www.flavortownusa.com/default.aspx

Also if you like deals check out www.thriftyhipster.com This will show you happy hours and drink specials for the two cities, and also breaks them down into sections.

If you like drinking and eating..definitely check out the Mystic Lake Casino. A stone's throw outside of downtown.

I would have to disagree with Mystic Lake being a stone's throw. About a 40-minute drive from downtown.

Northeast is a great option for cool bars with a little old-timey charm. But as pointed out, there is the extra wrinkle of taking a taxi there and back.

If you go to Nye's (and I think you should) go on a weekend night -- Fri or Sat) so you can see the polka band

Lots to do downtown if you want to stay close to your hotel -- and you should stay downtown, IMO.

I like Saffron, 112 Eatery for moderately priced restaurants. Murray's if you are going to splurge -- get the silver butter knife steak for 2. I just drooled on my lap.

Bars I like downtown: Local, Brits (rooftop), Loon, Imperial Room, Kierans ... and the new place to be is the CRAVE rooftop. Great view. Solera has a much easier rooftop to get to (fewer people, great views).

Look along Nicoolet Mall for hotels. Better to stay toward closer to 7th Street than the far south end -- closer to the action that way
