Rural Hotel near International airport

Hi everyone, I know it sound contradictory and perhaps far fetched, a rural hotel near an airport, but is it possible? We will arrive at the International Airport late afternoon mid June after a long flight from the UK and plan to drive north to Duluth the next day.

Does anyone know of an out of town hotel, for a one night stay, say within a one hour (approximately) drive of the airport and not to far off our intended next day northern route.

We plan on staying in town, to explore, before our return flight and would prefer countryside when we first arrive. Thanks in anticipation.

Stillwater with its antique shops and restaurants is about 45 minutes away from the airport.

Taylors Falls, MN / St. Croix Falls, WI area is just over an hour away with a couple of B&Bs in Taylors Falls and a Holiday Inn Express in St. Croix Falls. Interstate State Parks along the St. Croix River are scenic and it is rolling hills and tree covered valleys on the way there.

Duluth is less than 3hrs from the Mpls/STP airport on Interstate 35. Even if you don't stay in either area I mentioned, the drive from Stillwater to Taylors Falls (and then over to North Branch) is much more scenic than I-35 from the airport up to North Branch, but will add an hour to the drive between the airport and Duluth.

I agree it would be much more scenic, but would add time. So if you are looking to just get there, maybe go direct up 35 and stay in Hinckley or North Branch. If you are willing to go a little farther for scenery, go via Stillwater.

However, there is an option right off I-35 that I have been told good things about. The Grant House in Rush City. historic building restored to 1800s-era decor. Heard good things abotu food and service. It would get you up the road an hour or so. And in a nice comfy hotel. The drive itself would be pretty standardly dull. But the stay might make up for some of that. And you have scenery waiting for you in Duluth and (hopefully) on the north shore in general

I would spend all of my time in Duluth vs Stillwater. I agree that North Branch or Hinckley would be good options.

What day of the week do you arrive? It sounds like you're arriving around rush hour time, an hour on a weekend is a lot further out than an hour on a weekday!

I agree with MNtoAthens; Hinckley, North Branch or Rush City would keep you on track to getting up to Duluth without backtracking. The casino suggestion just made me cringe. It is not a "rural" experience at all! While driving north consider having breakfast or lunch at Kaffe Stuga in Harris (near North Branch). It is a mom & pop diner with homemade food and pie. It is on highway 61 which runs parallel to Highway 35. Highway 61 is the older route with a few stop signs along the way but which will let you see homes, main streets and businesses that you will not see off of the freeway.
