Coming down for football game in October. Everything is already full in Oxford. Looking for the next best accomodations. The closer to Oxford the better. Thanks.
We plan to go down for the UK/Ole Miss game. I went to Law School at Ole Miss. Even if you could find a room in Oxford, you get charged an exorbitant rate. We paid over $280.00 per night for a dingy Days Inn several years ago. A lot of people rent houses in Oxford for game weekends. There are a number available on College Weekends.com and VRBO. That's what we are planning to do. A lot of these are condos. If you go that route, make sure you clarify with the owner whether or not the unit is in a student oriented development. A lot of parents own these and kick their kids out for the weekend if they get a rental. Thus, you could wind up in the middle of a noisy party.
If that is not doable, the closest motels are in Holly Springs and off of I-55 in Batesville. I believe there are a couple in New Albany also. Not much else there in those areas. For my money, if I did not stay in Oxford I would stay in Memphis or at the casinos in Tunica.
Even though you said the closer to Oxford the better, eyewall's prefference is better in my opinion. If you stay in the Memphis area you'll have a better availability of rooms and dining options. Just south of Memphis at Goodman road and I-55 in Southaven, MS is a wide variety of chain hotel and restaurant choices and a decent outdoor shopping area. After an easy entrance onto 55 you are less than 100 miles to Oxford. Of course you could add 15 minutes on to that and stay near I-55 in a good hotel in Downtown Memphis and experience Blues, Brews & Barbecues!
