Visit to Ole Miss

My son wants to consider Ole Miss in his college visits. We are Californians, and haven't traveled to Miss. ever. Sounds like getting there is a challenge...not close to transportation. Any help would be appreciated...airports, hotels, transportation from airport to University???

I graduated from Ole Miss. My wife and son went to OM. It's a great school. You will be impressed after your first visit. Oxford is a great town and kids love it. There's an old town Square where all the restaurants, shops and bars are located. William Faulkner's home is down the street. There are beautiful homes in Oxford and a lot of great restaurants. Eli Manning played football at OM and makes Oxford his off season home. John Grisham has a home there also. The OM campus is beautiful. There's a 10 acre Grove on the campus near the stadium where people tailgate before all the football games. They just built a new $70 million law school building and more improvements are planned.

It's not hard to get to MS either. Fly from LA to Memphis non stop and drive an hour S to Oxford. There's a nice Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express in Oxford but you might want to stay at The Inn at Ole Miss which was completed a few years ago and it's on campus. Here's a link. A great B&B is 512 Van Buren which is two blocks from the Square.

Go to Square Books for fun shopping. There are great ladie's stores on the Square. Go to City Grocery for fine dining or Lenora's. Go to Ajax's for country food. Handy Andy has good BBQ and burgers or breakfast.

Oxford is a great town. Email me at terrene (at) cableone (dot) net if you need help. Good luck.

Oxford is not in the Delta but the MS Delta is a fun part of MS. It's an area from Memphis, TN to Vicksburg, MS along the MS River that flooded before levess were built to control high water in the spring from ice and snow melting up North. It's very flat and home to crops like Cotton, Rice, Soybeans and Corn. There are great towns in the Delta with a lot of history and home of the Blue's. Here's a link to visiting the Delta. The Delta starts about an hour's drive W of Oxford. Click on the places to visit like Clarksdale, Greenwood and Greenville. Good luck.

Here's a link to blues festivals in the Delta. Your son would enjoy a day trip to Clarksdale for lunch at Ground Zero owned by Morgan Freeman and visiting the blues museum there. The Delta is famous for good BBQ also.

My daughter is going to go to Ole Miss from Chicago-in the city not the suburbs! We visited there last January, and will be down there again this April. She is in the Flagship Chinese Program, and Croft.

It's an easy drive from Memphis. Only trouble with Memphis is it's not a hub and Southwest Airlines doesn't fly there. In Memphis, don't miss The Commissary for BBQ.

The square is nice, and Oxford seems like a nice college town. The campus is pretty.

SW is not popular today. Memphis was a NW hub and still has a big presence there with Delta after their merger. There are great flights into and out of Memphis.

Congratulations on your daughter going to OM. I wish her the best.

this is years after your post so hoping so you wil still see it.

am passing through Oxford, in transit for 1 night only and am wondering where to stay.

I'd like to see the old town square as you have described it but not sure what works for accommodation within walking distance.

any suggestions.

thanks for your help and also for your notes, they were very helpful

Sure, there are two nice hotels within 5 minute walking distance to the square. The Courtyard by Mariott and The Graduate. We have stayed at The Graduate and love it as it is a regional company that builds hotels with the specific college decor. They have shuttles you can use if needed or you can Uber around town. Many wonderful restaurants and upscale local stores and the friendliest people you will meet. Both my kids attend Ole Miss and we are from Ohio. 9 hours away. They never want to come home!

I think you love ole miss from California. It about and 1hr and 15minutes from Memphis. You could fly into jackson ms and it about 2.5 he drive. There is a lot of hotels one can stay at.

There are a lot of hotels that are in Batesville, just 20 minutes to ole miss,it will be and incredible experience and it's a laid back atomsphere.

Yes southwest does fly into Memphis. Ole is a great school and it's only what you make of it. You can rent a car from Memphis and take a tour. There not like mississippi in the spring.
