Day trip to small town and scenic countryside?

Hi,

We are a married couple in late 20s, no children, planning to visit KC in June. We will spend 1 day going to Union Station, WWI museum, and Country Club Plaza or Crown Center.

We also want to go to some small town or scenic countryside displaying the uniqueness of KC, maybe besides the river, to take a stroll. Just out of the city for something different. Not sure if there's anything like that. I have heard of Lawrence or Leavenworth, something like that. What's 1 or 2 places that are worth going for a day?

We will spend 2 nights there.

Thanks!

Lexington, Mo is about 1 hour east of Kansas City. Lots of Civil War history, antebellum homes, antique shops. Can tour a Civil War battlefield, and the Anderson House, which was a hospital during the War. Weston, Mo is another small town you might check out. Believe it is also about 1 hour north of KC. Another area with lots of antique shops, McCormick Distillery is located there. Lots of tobacco grown/sold in Weston.

Lawrence is a nice old College town. It still has a real main street with interesting stores, restaurants and bars. Also some museums to visit at the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian College.

Leavenworth is even a bit older with a lot of interesting, non-chain restaurants for the size of the community. You can visit the Fort, go by the federal Penitentiary (with its buffalo herd) and tour the unique C W Parker Carousel Museum where your admission includes a ride on a 1913 carousel.

You can add a second interesting community to a visit to Leavenworth. Either Atchison, Kansas (The Most Haunted Town In Kansas) with its trolley tours, Victorian Homes and Amelia Earhart Birthplace; or Weston, Missouri with its small old downtown, winery and antique shops.

Lots of other places with longer drives, but those are the closest.

If you decide on a specific community, we can suggest places to eat or give more detail on attractions.

The McCormick Distillery used to be a cool place to visit, but it changed hands in 1993 and they have since discontinured the tours. The smell in the bonded warehouses was smoooooth.

As you enter Leavenworth, you will see the VA hospital on your right. Turn right just before the hospital and go about 3 blocks to the National Cemetery. It is worth a brief drive through.

On the way back, turn into the complex of the hospital, it is interesting going by the main 100 year old plus buildings, most of which are no long in use. The coolest building is still used and admission is free - the Chapel of the Veterans. Once listed in Ripley's Believe it or not, the 1893 Gothic chapel has separate sanctuaries for both Protestants and Catholics on different floors. It also has gargoyles.

Then downtown, be sure to turn down the side streets. Many of the buildings are from the 1800s. I already mentioned the carousel museum. Another place to stop is the soda fountain and lunch counter at the Corner Pharmacy. www.kansastravel.org/cornerpharmacy.htm Its like stepping back in time.

Check out Parkville, Missouri which is just 10 miles northwest of the Kansas City downtown area and is on the Missouri river. They have English Landing Park that has a walking trail along the river and a number of small shops and restaurants. It is closer than Weston and Leavenworth if you are short on time.

PARKVILLE! They have exactly what you want, a nice long paved trail that runs along the MO River in English Landing Park, antique shops, art galleries, many restaurants, upscale and low-scale, from Subway to Piropos and Cafe Cedar. There is also the Parkville Nature Sanctuary with trails, you'll see deer for sure. A train runs right through the center of town, very cool. Here is a link to their website (not the greatest):

You won't be disappointed with your visit, Parkville is my favorite close getaway destination. Have a great trip!
