I decided to take advantage of the $10 fares on SkyBus and check out a city I've never been to before, so I'm headed to Kansas City for a couple days at the end of next month.
I've been doing some research online about what to see and do, but thought I'd ask here as well to see what folks recommend. I'm generally not real into tourist attractions per se. I don't do museums well -- tend to rush through. I will go to an art museum, though, and it sounds like there are a couple good ones in KC.
Mostly when I travel I like to find some kind of interesting/funky neighborhoods (e.g. Short North here in Columbus, The Loop in St. Louis, Highlands in Louisville, etc) with a lot of stores, restaurants, etc and just look around. Looks from my research that Crossroads fits the bill in KC? Any other neighborhoods to take a look around?
I'm also always looking for used bookstores. I know there are several Half Price Books locations around KC, and I intend to hit those, but any local ones I should check out?
Any other local must-sees?
I'm renting a car, so getting around isn't a problem. I haven't decided yet where I'm staying. Thinking about one of the casinos...I'm not a big gambler, but I thought it might be fun for a getaway. I'm also planning to spend Friday night in Lawrence, KS, since that looks like an interesting town.
