One day in the city

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some things to do in a day in Kansas City. I'll be buying a Metro day pass probably as I'll be driving a U-Haul in and out of town. I don't have everyone's taste, though, so here are some things I like:

Street Art

Artists Neighborhoods

Young or University Neighborhoods

I'm not a museum guy and am usually not really down to see the normal sights (I went to Paris and didn't get into the low arredisimonts (sorry for the misspelling)). I will definitely be eating Burnt Ends though, and I'll probably try both of the famous KCMO barbecue joints for lunch and dinner.

Anyway any suggestions are appreciated and please let me know if I'm being vague. Thanks everyone.

Also can anyone recommend a reasonably priced and safe hotel that has access to downtown? And are taxis common in the city? Thanks

Kansas City Missouri nickname is actually Paris on the plains. The area you would want to explore is from the River Market to The Country Club Plaza/Brookside, this area is very accessible via bus on the Max Main Street line.

Neighborhoods worth checking out

Crossroads Art District - Old Warehouse district now full of galleries and good restaurants. The first friday of every month is the best time to explore this area.

Southmoreland/Plaza area - Home to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, KC Art Insitute and Kemper Art Musuem, they are both free and worth checking out. The nelson has some great outdoor sculptures and they recently added a new metal tree to the collection, the new bloch building addition is nice as well. - There is a stop on the Max Bus Line that is called Art Musuems, so it's not hard to find. The plaza is full of chain stores and restaurants but it's nice to explore, it's the most vibrant area of KC

Westport (Westport RD and Pennsylvania) and 39th Street West (39th and State Line) Lots of Independent shops, ethnic eateries, good bars, cool area.

UMKC is near the Country Club Plaza but it's not really a university school, its more of a commuter campus so KC does not really have much of a student/university neighborhood, westport and the plaza might be the closest thing

RiverMarket/Columbus Park - Farmers Market, Asian Grocery Store, good restaurants and shops are in this area. This is the area that was once dominated by the Italian Mob and is where the movie Casino was based on - Columbus Park right next to the river market has the fire hydrants painted like the Italian flag. Great Vietmanese place called Vietnam cafe is here.

I would say Crossroads and Westport would be most to your liking. Both are a bit more eclectic than most KC areas. There is an Embassy Suites in Westport. Do you like the bar scene? If so, you could stay downtown, close to the Power and Light District. Obviously we have taxi service, but this is pretty much a driving town. But, you should be able to get most places you want to go on the Max.
