Where will you be staying? If its near Barnes/Childrens then there are many places near the Central West End that are all awesome for eating and drinking.

I would very highly recommend a place called "The Cup" right behind the Chase Park Plaza. The cupcakes are $4 or so, but the best you'll ever have.

The Boathouse in Forest Park is also a great place, and only minutes from Children's.

hi

we are staying at the residence inn, this is where all the families seem to stay whose children are having this surgery.

i dont think there is anything within walking distance from our hotel but may be wrong, we do have a free shuttle that will take us to places within a 3 mile raduis or we are happy to get a cab!

There are 3 Residence Inns in St. Louis. I think you mean the one at 525 S Jefferson Ave. If so, there is really nothing within walking distance, but a lot within a 3 mile radius.

Your profile says you are from Manchester. I assume that is Manchester UK.

The kids should get a kick out of The Fountain On Locust - an art deco ice cream parlor. They can try American barbeque at a place called Pappy's, and food from New Mexico at a new restaurant called Adobe Red.

Going south on Market Street, you will come to Union Station. Bigger than any train station in the UK, it now is a tourist destination. The Hard Rock Cafe is there. At Landry's the kids can try Louisiana cooking at Landry's or southern cooking at The Key West Cafe, and there is a food court with lots of choices in the Station. Also on Market Street, you can try shark meat at Sybergs.

St Louis has been ranked the number one city to visit for people with children. Zoo, Science Center, Magic House, Grant's Farm. Our gem is the City Museum - - - Your kid in the wheelchair may not be able to join in all the activities there, but the kid will get a kick out of watching everything that is going on.

St. Louis has magnificent architecture. There are two walking tours every Saturday morning that welcome wheelchairs: Be at the marquee of the hotel at Union Station at 10 AM on Saturday for a tour of the Western half of downtown. Eastern half tour starts at 10 AM at the Old Courthouse facing Kiener Plaza on Broadway. Only $5 per adult.

If you can confirm that your hotel is the Residence inn on Jefferson, that will help.

If that is the hotel you're staying at, you can catch the shuttle to restaurants in Midtown, the Central West End, Lafayette Square and Downtown.

There aren't tons of places that cater to kids, but plenty that would be fine. Some places you can try: Lafayette Fire Co, Ricardo's, Spaghetteria Mama Mia, Culpepper's, Majestic, Sweetie Pie's, Bogart's BBQ, Joe Buck's, PW Pizza, Charlie Gitto's, Landry's, Hard Rock Cafe, Vito's, Rosalita's, Syberg's on Market, Band T Pizza, Stefano's, Taqilleria, Anthony's Taverna.

Besides referencing TA reviews, you can use Yelp to search for nearby restaurants.

Plan on spending a lot of time in Forest Park - it's huge. The zoo is great. Visit the Citygarden downtown

Please let us know what questions you have about anything. There are lots of knowledgeable folks on this form who will be happy to help with your stay.

July can be hot, 90's F. or higher. If you come later in the month it will be hot, the beginning in the month will probably be in the lower 90's. Today, it is in the 80's.

If you come around the 4th of July, of course we will be having a holiday with fireworks at many locations around town.

I think you would like the zoo. It is free, except for parking, and all the other suggestions above I would second. Science Center has an Imax theater and planetarium also. Also nice. Science center is free, special exhibits and the theater are extra. Very accessible. Zoo is also accessible with ramps, etc. The zoo also has plenty of restaurants/shops you can duck into if you get too hot. Forest park is huge, but with many mature trees for shade, which would 'cool' things a bit for a picnic. Best of luck on your journey, and to your child having the surgery.

Oh, regarding boat trips. There is an old style paddle boat near the arch, however, we currently are expecting the river to rise (flooding problems here in the midwest), and I have heard the river may be elevated for up to a month. That might eliminate the possibility of that boat trip, as traffic will be shut down on the river.
