Chicago - St Louis

Hi, we're planning a trip next summer and wondered if anyone out there could suggest a good stopping off point a couple of hours into the Chicago - St Louis drive. Will have a 3 year old with us so somewhere suitable to get some dinner would be nice. Many thanks in advance for any ideas - not finding much at the moment!

Springfield is a great place and approximately half way on the trip. The Lincoln Presidential Museum and sites are great for kids and adults. I personally believe it is one of the best museums in the country.

Springfield also has some fun places to eat; they just had a special on The Travel Channel (Man v Food) which highlighted some of the best. Cozy Dog Drive-In (claims to have invented the corn dog) is great, especially for kids. If you're just looking for a quick food stop, this may be the place.

I agree with the Springfield stop. The Lincoln Pres. Library is a great spot that all Americans should see IMO. You'll want to allow at least a couple of hours for this. If you don't want to take the time, then at least stop by Lincoln's tomb for a nice spot to stretch your legs. Ask the attendant to give you the background story. There's no tour or anything, but they'll answer any questions about Lincoln and the family. Another good stop is the Lincoln Home, just south of the downtown area. The tour of the home is very good and free.

If this is a daytime trip, and you're looking to do some sightseeing then finish up with dinner, I agree with the above.

If you're just looking for a place to stop on the way, where there are a number of dining options, you could also consider Bloomington. It is about 2 1/2 hours from downtown Chicago down Interstate 55 by 135 miles. (Springfield is closer to 3 1/2 hours.)

If you're interested, there is a Bloomington (ILL) Trip Advisor page.
