passing through on a road trip...need help with hotels

My husband and I are driving from TX to NH and will be stopping in St. Louis for the day and staying overnight in the area. We are looking for a reasonable hotel...preferably no more than 100. We do not need to stay in the city and can even drive a little further as we are going up through OH next. And hotel recs or cities outside of St. Louis to look into? We have no idea where to look. Are there any areas we should stay away from? Thanks in advance

Well, I don't think there is a single franchised motel/ hotel in ESL, so there are no worries. Only reason to stay would be if you are spending time at the Casino Queen in town along the river. I would suggest doing priceline on downtown St. Louis hotels, I read all the time about people getting good properties for maybe $50/60 night. Even with parking that'll put you well under $100, and give you a chance to walk around and sightsee a bit - maybe take the train to Delmar Loop or Central West End. Otherwise, there are a number of chain places in Collinsville (IL) off I-70, it is a suburban type area with lots of chain dining, big box, etc. Safe too.

I would keep going for about another 30 mins or so beyond STL into Illinois if that doesnt add to much to your driving for that day. Maybe Collinsville or as far as Mount Vernon might be options for you. That way you are already through the city and dont have to worry about morning traffic. That is the way I prefer to do things typically.

I was going to suggest Collinsville IL or Fairview Heights IL.

Both are within 10 miles of downtown st louis. Both have very nice areas for tourists to sleep and eat.

I think Fairview Heights would be a little out of the way if you're taking 70 up to Indianapolis, as I suspect. Collinsville is probably your best bet after passing through STL. Edwardsville is a little further and a bit off the path, but has some great restaurants.
