aniversary trip

Arriving on Feb 22 leaving the 25 th. I was thinking of staying at union station. We want to see the tourist spots, museums, the arch, ballpark and catch a hockey game. Any suggestions on hotel, and good sites would be great. We will be on foot also. Thanks!!

For a hotel, I usually suggest using Priceline for a 3.5 star hotel downtown. Try $65. Betterbidding.com has some history on bids and what hotels were "won". Hotwire is also good for this - again, I suggest 3.5 stars. FYI, Union Station is not a great attraction - just a few shops are left. The Drury Inn there is a fine hotel.

I hope the weather is nice. This town isn't very easily explored by foot. The Metrolink is an easy way to visit the Central West End, Delmar Loop and downtown. Not many tourist spots are real close to the Metrolink: The Arch being the most prominent. The History Museum is also convenient. The City Museum isn't too far off. It's fun for the young at heart - a big artistic playground, really. The Zoo, Art Museum, Anheuser-Busch and Cathedral Basilica aren't real close to the Metrolink stops, unfortunately. They rate as the other must see attractions. The tour of Busch Stadium is fun and pretty inexpensive.

Once you decide what hotel you're using and any scheduled events, we can suggest some restaurants. Make a reservation for the Arch.

What other interests do you have? Craft beer? Live Music? Theater? Fine Dining? Antiquing? What's your idea of a good time?

Ok, I see that the union station is not that intersting. I'm trying to choose between the millennim and the hilton down town. I checked through priceline and they have a great rate for both.

We love art and museums, definitely love beer, live music and eating out. I read about some bar b q places that sound appealing and I would also like to see a show, such as the book of mormon. I do plan on checking out the baseball stadium as we love sports. I see that there is also a hockey game while we are in town. The city museum sounds fun and is a must on my check list. Financially I am prepared to have a great time, just not real sure how. LOL

Do you think I would be better off renting a car than relying on cabs and public transportation. I dont mind a long walk if the weather is favorable.

Another option for hotel is the renaissance on Washington. It's walking distance to lots of bars and restaurants. The nightlife is good. Close to the arch, ballpark, casino.

Definitely the Hilton over the Millenium. The Renaissance Grand is also a good choice, but probably more expensive.

Rent a car for sure. The best way to enjoy St. Louis is to include visits to great neighborhoods like Soulard and South Grand and the Hill, all of which are way off the Metrolink path. Also, I don't like to send people on buses and taxi's are expensive.

Do go see the Book of Mormon (at the Fox, right? It's spectacular). A Sunday matinee, maybe? Hockey games are a lot of fun here - the crowd really gets into it, especially Fri/Sat. night games. The City Museum will be swarmed with kids during the day, but is open until 1 AM on Fri and Sat.

Some more suggestions:

Spend Friday night on and around Washington Avenue. Dinner at Mango, Bridge, Copia or Blondie's. Blondies or Bridge are great for after dinner drinks, whichever you don't choose for dinner. You'll enjoy walking Wash Ave between 12th and 15th if the weather is nices, pop in to places that look like your kind of crowd. OR you could go to the City Museum after dinner (prices are lower after 5 - there are a couple of bars in the museum), dress down if you're going to City Museum - you'll be fine dressed down at Bridge or Mango more so than the other two.

A Friday Alternative: Have dinner at 1111 Mississippi, followed by craft beers at Square One or maybe a chocolate martini at Bailey's, both are within walking distance of the restaurant.

Visit the Hill Saturday for lunch - we love the Gorgonzola dip at Adriana's (it gets crowded). Eovaldi's and Goia's are also great lunch spots.

Sat night after the game, go to McGurk's in Soulard for live music - it's a fun crowd. The Brpadway Oyster Bar is another great option.

Sunday AM reserve brunch at Brasserie or Bixby's in the History Museum.

Thanks for the advice. We have purchased tickets to the 7pm game on Saturday to see the blues.

I will arrive at the airport at 10 am on thursday. I am hoping to come into the city and have a great lunch around the hotel and start sight seeing. Any suggestions?

Friday I would like to go to forest park and see everything! LOL it looks very fun on the internet. Saturday we would like to take the tour of the stadium unless we can squeeze it in on Friday.

I would like to visit soulard for nice stroll at some point. How about the botanical gardens, will it be a far drive?

I figured I would make a day out of forest park and another day at the botanical garden and maybe the Budweiser tour.

The Book of Mormon play is on the list for 1pm on sunday. Any suggestions on seating? $100 seats or will the balcony be sufficient to still see good?

I'd consider checking out Soulard or the Hill on Thursday. If you just want lunch, go to Adrianna's on the Hill. Definitely one of the best sandwich places around! There's not a lot to walk around and do in that area besides eat amazing Italian food. Soulard is pretty much the same unless you want to check out the bars. It is a neat area, one of my favorites. You could have lunch at Blues City Deli (also amazing) and enjoy the area. If you want to walk around a shopping area, have lunch in the Central West End and walk around the boutiques. Lots of antique shops and amazing houses. There are several really great restaurants in the area depending on what you are in the mood for.

If the weather is nice you might want to hit Forest Park on Thursday. There is a nice restaurant in the History Museum and several free exhibits inside the museum that are worth checking out. The park is huge. There is a trolley that will take you to the different attractions. Do some research and decide what you are into. You can't go wrong with anything.

The Botanical Gardens is close to The Hill and not far from downtown. All of the areas that you have mentioned are a 10 minute drive from downtown. Again, depends on the weather.

Book of Mormon has limited tickets remaining so you may not have a choice but the Fox is breathtaking and a wonderful venue to see a show. It is large so the closer the better in my opinion. We went to see Pricilla Queen of the Desert last night and had a great meal beforehand at Frazier's Brown Bag near Soulard. It was a great night. I highly recommend that place for a fun dinner. Try the Salmon Frazier if you like salmon. It is very close to the Brewery.

We have several local breweries worth checking out if you like beer but the AB tour is neat to do.

Hope this helps!

I will arrive at the airport at 10 am on thursday. I am hoping to come into the city and have a great lunch around the hotel and start sight seeing. Any suggestions?

Great lunch downtown: Sauce on the Side, Bailey's Range, Tigin or Pi. The City Museum would be nice on a Thursday, I'd think - less crowded than the weekend. It will probably be moms and their young screaming kids, but not so many...

Friday I would like to go to forest park and see everything! LOL it looks very fun on the internet. Saturday we would like to take the tour of the stadium unless we can squeeze it in on Friday.

The Zoo, Art Museum and History Museum are all worth a visit. You could have lunch at the Boathouse or Bixby's.

I would like to visit soulard for nice stroll at some point. How about the botanical gardens, will it be a far drive?

The Gardens would be convenient from Forest Park or downtown. I'd suggest squeezing in the Cathedral Basilica (half hour is fine), very convenient to Forest Park.

I figured I would make a day out of forest park and another day at the botanical garden and maybe the Budweiser tour.

They have a brewmasters tour that costs maybe $20 and is supposed to be very good. The free tour is also good, just short.

The Book of Mormon play is on the list for 1pm on sunday. Any suggestions on seating? $100 seats or will the balcony be sufficient to still see good?

Never sat in the balcony, but I'd guess it will be fine, also a great place to see the whole beautiful theater.
