In Billings for one late afternoon and evening with family.

I'm staying at the Dude Rancher Lodge in late August to catch a flight out the next morning after a trip to Yellowstone with my family. Are there any sort of touristy things to do/see in the downtown area that we can do? I understand it is something like a Jackson Hole, but there must be something for us to do that last afternoon. Also, any recommendations for a place to eat near downtown?

: / Billings a little like Jackson Hole???? hmmmmm.....whomever told you that had to be pulling your leg. I would say Billings is the exact opposite of Jackson Hole. LOL

You said late August....what day exactly?

The Magic City Blues Fest is in August. They close a street downtown and have back to back bands starting around 5pm each night on August 12th and 13th. Don't know if that's too early for your plans.

Each Thursday in the summer they have a "Alive after 5" downtown. It's at a different place each week. Again they close a street and have a band. Different bars and food vendors set up and its a big street dance/party.

There is a Yellowstone Art Museum downtown along with a good museum with a cabin that Charlie Russell painted a lot of his art in if you're interested in that stuff. The Moss Mansion is in the downtown area which is really cool to tour.

The following is a website for the Billings Downtown Association. They have quite links on the site dedicated to dining opportunities downtown along with information for nightlie, museums, theaters, shopping. There is also a calendar for downtown events each month. You should find some good information on it.

PS....axle recommended Bistro Enzo on Rehberg Lane- while it's not difficult to get to is quite a ways from downtown Billings.

At first glance, at least from the interstate, Billings is an ugly place. Refineries, industrial plants and the bad side of town. If you are staying downtown you may want to check out the indian caves out on sacrifice cliff. If you're a baseball fan go to a Mustang's game at the new baseball park. The background view is of the rimrocks and is one of the best ways to spend and evening.

Billings = Jackson Hole.... where did you hear that?

I think you've gotten some pretty good advice. Billings is not too pretty from the interstate but it is a nice city when you get inside. The Dude Rancher is a classic.

The city's main feature is a row of sandstone cliffs which form the northern edge of the city. They are quite striking, and you can hike in them. Go up Zimmerman trail on the northwest edge of town for a great view. 27th Street will take you right up to the airport, which is on the top of the cliffs.
