Fishing in Gardiner

We'll be spending two or three nights in Gardiner in mid-September. Is it possible to fish in Gardiner or will it be necessary to drive and hour or two away? Husband would like to fish a few hours one day.

The Yellowstone River goes right through Gardiner. Just south of Gardiner, the Paradise Valley is a fly-fishing mecca. It might involve some driving, but would be worth it. Contact Dan Bailey Fly Shops in Livingston for more information.

You can also fish right inside the park. Inside and outside the park have different licenses and regulations, so get informed before you get a line wet.

As a general rule, you use light tackle spin casting (8-11 lb test, with very flexible rod) or fly fishing gear in the area. It is not a worm fishing area -- bait is often not allowed. You will find local grasshoppers that can be caught and put on for added excitement.

Just one clarification - Paradise Valley is north of Gardiner, between there and Livingston :-)

We were in Gardiner in late June and there is a good fishing store in Gardiner across the street from The Raven ( a great place to dine) and a whitewater rafting company. I cannot recall the name of the place but my boys and I spent an hour or so in the shop and they have plenty of advice and guides. Gentlemen from Atlanta that lives there for 7 months a year was very knowledgeable and kind. It's on the mainstreet headed up the hill from the river.
