Summer in Lake Tahoe

Thinking of going to Lake Tahoe in July/Aug.

Is there much to do in summer without the snow?

Where to stay? not into gambling.

Thanks in advance.

OM goodness the summer is the best time in Tahoe. Oops did I say that?? I've been takling my summer vacation in Tahoe since I was a wee tiny baby. July/August is a great time. My personal favorite place on the lake happens to be the west side. Homewood, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, that area. It's a slower pace than Tahoe City while being close enough to get to a larger grocery or to raft down the Truckee or to spend the day at HIgh Camp at Squaw Valley or...

Tell me what you like to do and I'll make a list of activities.

Hikes, Beaches, Shakespeare Festival, Sailing, Boating?

Thanks Suzi, just what I needed to know. You were almost spot on with the suggestions, except for the Shakespeare ref - everything else yes.

Does the ski lift still operate in summer, the one going from the south rim? Are there eating places "up top"?

Thanks in advance.

Heavenly and Squaw Valley both operate their trams during the summer. In Squaw Valley there is an entire resort area up there where you can spend the day at the pool, ice skating, drinking at the rather large palapa bar and giant jacuzzi, plus there is a grill. You can also hike around. Heavenly is not as developed up top but you can take in the views, hike around and have a meal.

I will gather some information for activities and lodging and get back to you shortly.

I too am planning to go to Tahoe this summer - traveling with 2 kids, 8 and 11. Other than the lake activities themselves, are there ways to keep the kids busy as far as attractions or anything like that? Is one area better than another for the kids?

If your kids like being outdoors they will love Tahoe. Don't forget the easy "hike" ( it is more like a walk) to down to Emerald Bay to see the Scandanavian Castle.; the Renaissance Faire at Camp Richardson in June-with a stop at their ice cream shoppe anytime for huge cones, bike rentals, hiking, hanging out at the lake, picnics. There are arcades in the casinos the kids love as well as great buffets that are family affodable. there are also movie theaters, shopping, bowling, all of the typical stuff. We always stay in South Lake Tahoe - look online for a plethora of places to stay. Many private rental homes, condos in addition to the motels.

Have Fun....

Do an internet search on South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals and you will find many options with photos attached. There are lovely condos at the top of Ski Run Dr. going up to Heavenly. The trams run up to Heavenly from the Marriott Grand Residence (also a beautiful property) and the views are breathtaking. There was mountain biking up there a few summers ago but I don't know if they are still doing that. You can alsocheck redweek.com to find a timeshare vacation rental in Tahoe. It all depends on the details: how many people, how rustic or luxurious-lakeside homes go at a premium of course, how much you want to pay. You might check out Camp Richardson or Zephyr Cove sites to find lodging with a rustic flair.

Gatordana, we're staying at the Hyatt Seirra lodge in April- condo's next door to the Hyatt Regency at Incline Village- north tahoe. It has it's own private beach on the lake and the condo guests get to use the amenities from the hotel- the pools, room service.... was recommended by a friend and she said it was excellent for kids, beautiful property, good restaurants. They stayed at the hotel, regency club level becuase she couldn't get a condo. There's also Camp Hyatt for the kids too! They're both ranked very well here. Good luck!
