Where to stay if you hate casinos and gambling?!

Hi, we are a fairly alternative (a mix of eco/hippy/arty) touring California next year and would love to visit Lake Tahoe, but are really put off by the mention of casinos and gambling, our idea of hell. Would we hate it all, or is it possible to stay there and avoid that culture? Any suggestions of where to stay (£budget-midrange) for 2 nights? Thanks so much everyone!

You might have more luck by asking in the 'Lake Tahoe (California)' sub-forum as it'll be easier to avoid the casinos on that side of the lake.

As Truckosaurus said, the california side of the lake is casino free. If you insist on staying on the nevada side, check out zephyr cove: www.zephyrcove.com/lodging/zephyr-cove-lodge/

First, Lake Tahoe is all about the great outdoors.

Casino culture that exists in Las Vegas is not the same in Lake Tahoe - the closest thing to that is Reno, but its still very different than Las Vegas.

If you want to avoid casinos, do not stay in Stateline, Nevada or Crystal Bay, Nevada.

I would suggest looking at Incline Village, some places in South Lake Tahoe, and some on the west side of the lake such as Camp Richardson

Its not only possible, its probable. You would have to go out of your way to do so by entering one of the few casinos. It's not really about the CA side vs. the NV side, its more of a north vs. south thing. The south has the large (5, I think) casinos and all the activity, crowds and commercialism that goes with it. And even with that, its still a small mountain community. The north has a more chill and outdoorsy vibe, which sounds like something you are seeking. I would recommend looking at anything in between (and including) Tahoe City and Incline Village.

I like the Ritz Carlton. Great property and for you no casino.
