where to stay in tahoe for skiing!

Hi!

My boyfreind and i are going to go to tahoe (flying into Reno) for 10 days in jan 2008 - we want to stay somewhere we dont have to hire a car - ie walk to the lifts to go skiing and be able to hire gear etc (so not lugging all our gear from australia!)

any suggestions? i like the look of heavenly and have been suggested the montbleu casino to stay at - is this walking distance to the lifts etc??

any advicce appreciated!

I don't really think that you'd want to walk from the Montbleu to the gondola during the winter. If it's snowing or there is snow on the ground that mile might be just a little too far. I'm sure that there would be a shuttle though either the Blue Go or even Mont Blesu would have one.

Mont Bleu is too far to walk. In addition to suzie-travel's advice, there is a Heavenly shuttle bus that serves all of the casinos.

You would be wise to check out Harrah's for lodging. it is within walking distance, though I do not recommend the walk in ski boots.

Harrah's rooms all have two full size bathrooms. The accomodations are excellent!

Most of the larger properties have shuttles or shuttle stops nearby so getting to the mountain at Heavenly won't be a huge problem. Some of the other resorts (Kirkwood, Sierra at Tahoe) have busses that go out to their moutains as well. They all stop at major hotels/resorts.

The "downtown" area of South Lake Tahoe basically consists of 4 resort/casinos on the Nevada side of the state line (Harrah's, Harvey's, MontBleu, and the Horizon), and an ever-changing number of motels (with a couple larger resorts) on the California side. The closest places to the lift to stay will be the Marriott (although it is mostly a timeshare), the Embassy Suites, Harrah's, and Harveys.

Hi,

Geee our local expert says a mile from mont! LOL.. Try 2.5 miles and NO you should not walk it, this will only prove to be a pain in ski boots and gear.

All the casinos in the area (we have 6) will have service to all the resorts. If you want to stay in a casino then I would choose Harrahs and or Harverys as the walk to the gondola is one block (just walk past the embasy). The Marriot complex has a few place to rent gear (I would use them instead of renting from Heavenly as you will save money that way). If you would like to be close to the lifts and still down town! your best bet would be to stay at the Marriot or the Embasy suites. Marriot is a time share however they offer night stays as well, Embasy is pretty nice also. I would not venture other places as most places are being removed for the new convention center (from hwy 50 to park ave and 2 blocks down).

You are smart to not hike your gear from australia as the spring conditions are no good, I would hit the mountain right when it opens (very icey) and you are good for about an hour of skiing! after that you have slush about 6 inches deep on your skis and a lot of work, I have loged in about 100 days at Heavenly this year and I can tell you it was a bad season, so be sure to ask for a discount on your lift ticket.

I don't think there will be spring conditions in January 2008 when the OP is planning to come to Heavenly.

So I just checked it out to see the mileage. The distance to MontBleu is closer to a mile and then the Gondola to the Chart House on 207/Kingsbury Grade is about 2 miles. Sometimes it does seem like places are further apart especially when you are walking or the weather is bad. If you find your mileage/odometer to be different let's discuss.

suzie...we all love your input and knowledge of the area and are glad that you are here!

OP try embassy suites rooms are pricey but great location very good free breakfast and the free drinks at night are great as well

there are also many small motels that are not 5 star by any means but will be cheaper then the hotel/casinos

Hi all

Thanks for all the suggestions - we eneded up booking 5 days at heavenly at inn by the lake and 5 days at sqaw at sqaw valley lodge!

I hope we do get ok snow - we went to canada 2 years ago and it was their worst season ever with grass halfway up whistler mountain! AND to afford this trip we had to pass on skiing at home this year!
