Lake Tahoe With Girlfriend! (July 2nd - July 8th)

Hey guys. I'm flying into Reno on July 2nd and will be staying through July 8th. I'm in Reno for the Mensa Annual Gathering, but my girlfriend will be driving from her home in Martinez, California to stay with me.

I've never been to Lake Tahoe, and I want to go there for a day, or two, and a night during the convention to spend some quality time with her and to make some memories and take some great photographs.

I'm 23, she's 22. Money is a bit tight. And it is going to be the week of July 4th, so I can imagine costs will be running at their highest rates.

I'm looking for any tips you can give me regarding:

-Bed and Breakfasts

-Hotels

-Best locations on the lake

-Scenic views/ Places to picnic (Looking to take her on a picnic)

-Sunrise and Sunset locations

-Reasonably affordable activities in the area.

-The best FOOD in the area. Homecooked style would be welcomed. Again, we're a couple of kids in our early 20's. We like a good drink (I myself would enjoy some local microbrews) and a good, familiar meal. Chicken, steaks, BBQ, in a comfortable setting. Fancy doesn't quite accommodate our personalities :D

If you've had great/fun/romantic experiences with your loved ones, please don't hesitate to share!

Could really use the help! Thanks guys!

My wife and I spend our honeymoon in Lake Tahoe a few years back. Absolutely beautiful. We stayed in a cabin at Zephyr Cove. I'm guessing you can probably get a cheaper room in one of the casino hotels in Stateline (especially if you have a Total Rewards card - I can get comped rooms at a couple of the casinos with mine).

If your girlfriend is driving out, perhaps she can bring camping gear (tent, air mattress, sleeping bag(s) ). Zephyr cove has a good size campground just across the street from the main building. There is a tent only section up near the top of the hill. My wife and I would take evening walks in this area when we were there. We were there at the beginning of July (actually left the morning of the 4th) and there was still plenty of empty sites. This would be the most economical way to stay there that I could think of. The restaurant at Zephyr cove was nice, and not too pricy either. Just down the road a few miles is Lakeside Inn and Casino. This is a small "locals" place that had real good prime rib for less than $10. The sunset picture to the left of this reply is of Lake Tahoe taken along the northern end of the beach at Zephyr Cove.

There are many hiking trails around Lake Tahoe, some are mentioned in the link below. We really liked the Eagle Lake trail - it is a shorter hike. That may be a good place to pack in a picnic (bring swim trunks and towels as well). Emerald Bay is beautiful. The Eagle Lake trail head is real near Emerald Bay, so you can see both at the same time. Another option is to take one of the sightseeing paddle wheelers across the lake to Emerald Bay (MS Dixie II out of Zephyr Cove Marina and there is another one out of South Lake Tahoe).

For some great views of the lake, take Mt. Rose highway (431) to Incline Village when you get south of Reno. There may still be a small amount of snow in the passes (nothing on the road, but it is fun to see snow in July). From there, Take 28 south along the east shore of the lake. There are many beautiful views along the drive as well as some turnouts for photo ops. 28 will eventually dead in into US50 which you can continue south on towards Stateline/South Lake Tahoe.

I have also linked two TA reviews I have submitted (Eagle Lake trail, Zephyr Cove) that include pictures.

More photos from that Lake Tahoe trip in July 2008. When we were there, there were large wildfires about a hundred miles west, thus the haze when looking at the mountains across the lake.

The first four pictures are from different pull-offs along route 28. The bulk of the rest were taken at Zephyr Cove (with a couple on the MS Dixie II). The last five are in the eagle lake / eagle falls area.

A very informative response. Will be able to put a lot of it to use! Thanks a lot, 16gauge!

Camping is a good idea. I think I'm going to be looking for a hotel though for this overnight. I can spring for a hotel or a bed & breakfast for a night, so if anyone could relate some of their experiences, prices, or pictures even, that would be appreciated!

Hiking is looking like a good idea. Thanks for providing the trail listings!

If anyone else would like to share their experiences, opinions, please do so.

We'll be in Incline Village, 40 minutes from Reno, over the Mt. Rose Hwy. It a really nice drive. They have fireworks in several places around the lake. Incline has them, but hard to get near the beach unless you are staying in lodging there.

You might try Ferrari's Crown Resort/Motel on the lake in King's Beach on the north shore. It's one of the least expenses places over the holiday. They shoot off fireworks there.
