North or South Lake Tahoe

My husband and I are planning a 5 day trip to Lake Tahoe. Need suggestions on where to stay, North or South, what to do, and restaurants. We like to do outside activities (moderate hiking), casinos at night and sight seeing. We will be renting a car to get around. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. You can't go wrong either way. If you want the diversity of outdoor activities and casinos, I would recommend South Shore. S. Lake Tahoe offers a wide range of lodging, restaurants, outdoor activities with casinos right there. Over the years we've grown to like North Shore better, but casinos aren't usually in our plan. In any case, it's just a short drive down the shore from Tahoe City if you do go that route.

Have fun.

Yes, you'll have access to all of those activities and diversions at both ends of the lake. In fact, you'll probably drive from one end to the other, and even the full circle at least once. On our most recent trip we stayed in South Lake Tahoe and I think that's our preference. We found traffic to be more of an issue at the north end of the lake.

We like the north east side of the Lake, in Incline Village. There is a casino there at the Hyatt where we stay, and several over in Crystal Bay. Can rent bikes, kayaks and boats in Inclilne, without the crowds of the south shore or over at Tahoe City. It's an easy 25 min. drive to Stateline where there are about 4 casinos hotels. Plenty of restaurants at both shores.

Sand Harbor is a couple miles from Incline, and in my opinion the most beautiful beach at Tahoe. You can leave by shuttle every 20 min from Incline.

CAnative mentions the Hyatt at Incline Village which is a great place to stay, but it could be out of your budget? Generally the South Shore is more built up with more restaurant choices and the large casinos. The North Shore is quieter and more laid back. I enjoy both sides of the lake. Lake Tahoe is not so large in area so that you can easily drive to any point of the lake area for activities.

If you have 5 days, why not do both - do 2-3 days in North Lake Tahoe, and 2-3 on the south side.
