Tahoe city in April

We are heading to California in April and wil be heading from San Fran to Napa and then Tahoe city and then onto Yosemite.

What I am trying to fgured out is that I really want to go to Tahoe and stay in the north of the lake as i gather this is less comemrcial? anyways, what the chance of not being able to get there due to snow or get out due to snow? As we wil be in a rental coming from Australia chains could be a problem! I want to book accomodation before i go if i can but am a bit unsure if we should in case we cant get there? any suggestions/advice?

April is a transition month for the weather. It could be snowing or you might find bright sunshine with warm temperatures. The further in the month of April the lesser chance of snow.

I would try to be flexible. If the weather is nice - go. If the weather is nasty skip the chains and go and do something else. You could also rent a 4 X 4 vehicle and not mess with the chains, but these vehicles are more expensive and use more gas.

In April on a non weekend, you would have no trouble finding lodging. You could just drive up there and find a place to stay at the North Shore.

I seldom book ahead for my stays at Lake Tahoe unless it is a busy time.

Also, since you are trying to avoid commercial places, Tahoe City is the most commercial area of the North Lake Tahoe area. There are many small towns in this area that have less commerce.

Good advise above

A couple of additional notes

Easter is April 20th and Tahoe the week before and week after can be a very popular time to visit.

As such, I would line up lodging in advance so you get what you want for those 2 weeks - especially if it includes Easter week-end.

In terms of where on the lake - we just got back from a wonderful SLT vacation and loved every minute.

We've stayed at various places around the lake and they all are nice.

If you want casinos more restaurants, and more night life you want SLT but in general, its pleasant anywhere around the lake. In case of a snow storm, they are pretty quick on clearing the roads as soon as the storm lets up (we saw this in action in October again).

have fun.

Thanks so much for the advice, we would be there around 5/6th April. We are not really looking for night life and that sort of thing more into the natural beauty walking taking pics etc. So at this stage then may be I will hold fire booking at least until next year?
