1. Re: TR 2/12-15 Valentine’s at the Venetian..Getting some V and V

We arrived at Venetian and were transported to Valentine-land.

Truly romantic, all the white fragrant flowers in the lobby reminded me of our wedding. Freesia, lily, orchids, you name it. The décor was intricate, very gold, and the ceiling paintings reminded me of Europe. An accordion player in the lobby serenaded the line. For the first time ever, we did not care about waiting in line. I was bummed when they told us to go upstairs to another lobby to check in (of course I read about that here on TA). So there were more flowers that looked just like our wedding flowers in this lobby.

They apologized for the wait and said they were trying to get us a nice view for our anniversary. I was like who cares, take all night, I want to smell the flowers and look at the ceiling. So off to find our room. We were intent on getting lost but there was always a friendly staff member to direct us the right way. The suite was beautiful, baroque kind of décor, but looked comfortable, sunken living room, big marble bathroom w. soaking tub and our course our King size bed. I think the lamps were the Venetian Griffin mascot. The strip view was fantastic, lots of neon and Tangerine at TI lit up and sparkled! In the AM the snow capped mountains were all around, which I love. Amazing view.

Off to eat, we chose the Asian Noodle House so we could gamble more quickly. Good choice. The wonton soup was the closest we had to Philly Chinatown in awhile (shrimp & pork wontons). We had multiple visits here and every time I got the Spring rolls.

We headed over to pick up my Venetian Player’s club card and lose the $15 free play in a slot machine..then off to TI & Mirage for Roulette. We won! Came back to La Scena bar for dawncaps (since it was about 5 AM Eastern time by now), they had a cover band that did one hit wonders from the 80s & 90s. Entertaining. The place was packed. Getting tired so we played a Star Wars slot machine complete w. music and Chewbacca noises that sound like my dog and called it a night.

Next day, jet lag awoke me way too early, so went hunting for coffee and cake. What I found was Krispy Kreme in the lobby food court! That was more Valentine magic! (You can get Krispy Kremes from room service too) So I got a big bag and headed back upstairs. I also spied a croissant stand so took one of those too. You can’t charge the Bouchon station in the lobby to the room though so good thing I won. My husband was up to head over to TI for his poker tourney. So I hung out and wrote the free postcards included w. stationary and enjoyed my view and donuts. I am a big postcard writer so loved that touch, have not seen that recently. Saw people swimming in the pool, it was in the mid 60s but I am not that brave. Lovely pool.

Decided to shop, and how convenient! The elevator has a “ Grand Canal Shops” button, and a spa button too. Here is the luckiest part of my whole trip..sale at Jimmy Choo! 2 pair for the price of one. I spent most of the day as a uberconsumer, not even paying attention to my missing husband. Tip: they will give you a coupon book for the Canal shops and you do not need the voucher I forgot to print out. They will give you as many as you want too. I had yummy hazelnut gelato in St. Mark’s square, along w. cappuccino & biscotti and watched the street performers. It was just like Europe but inside. Loving it! Finally my husband phoned as I was bringing my loot upstairs. He placed 5th and the prizes went to 4th. We lunched at Canaletto, risotto for both of us, a great meal, serenaded by performers again. After a dessert cappuccino we decided to hang out in the suite before heading over to Wynn. (Missed it last time)

We realized our camera battery died and there was supposedly Walgreen’s across form Wynn, well we did not find it. So Wynn and had no idea either but escorted us to a gift shop where we bought a disposable camera, hope our pictures are OK…Wynn is magnificent, very new, very spacious, and very red ( I was surprised at that). We took photos and shopped but no Manolo for me this trip. We did not win but they had a cute Hollywood Squares machine. I was too tired for Roulette. Walked back to V for naptime and some truffles (they have a truffle stand in the lobby too). Made a late reservation for Aquanox before napping. We could not decide between this or Delmonico’s. I have to mention the shampoo here was amazing. I have never found that in a hotel until now.

Aquanox…Wow. Wrote a review but does not do it justice. Every nuance was perfect. We savored and lingered in a romantic booth over steak/lobster. It was early V.Day. The staff was exceptional and came to check on us often. We did not even care we missed the 10:30 comedy show we planned to see. Tip: Our dessert was free for our anniv. They asked what we were celebrating when we reserved. I know why they offer romance/Aquanox dinner packages. Next time I am getting one.

Off to gamble! Or so he thought. Tip: Allvegaspoker.com is not always up to date, check with the hotel before you go. The wrong times were listed for Mirage, TI & Harrah’s. So we played roulette at Mirage and were not lucky. Went to Revolution lounge very stylish looking but the disco music and Beatles 60s theme did not mix for me, no complaint tho. The “Abbey Road” & Beatles shop is worth seeing. Back to V for more losing and dawncaps at La Scena, same band but Guns & Roses cover.. very fun. Decided to get up early and try the Poker Tourney at Aladdin at 10AM.

Worth Noting: I did not get lost in Venetian the whole time we visited, a feat because I have no sense of direction. I have managed to get disoriented at every other hotel we stayed at in Vegas.

V-Day. Headed to Aladdin for the poker tournament. Oh, the romance..Just kidding, we had a very romantic breakfast of Krispy Kremes as we enjoyed our suite view. I decided to play Roulette instead of shop but that did not last long…within an hour I was in Starbucks drowning my sorrows. Tip: the Starbucks does not take your Starbucks card, none in the casinos do. Aladdin is renovated and upgraded from last year, plush carpet and all. Construction is ongoing though so I’d wait before staying here but I would stay here. On-site shopping is my thing.

They were shooting a movie about the MIT students that tries to beat the odds in Vegas so part of the casino was closed off. I did see Kate Bosworth ( skinny!). The other star was Kevin Spacey, who the guy watching beside me had met, said he was a nice guy. Upstairs at the poker room they have a Rocky memorabilia exhibit. Very cool, but maybe cuz we’re from Philly.

The shops/restaurants seem to have expanded, even a Brazilian place. MMM. I ended up joining the Players Club and getting a pull at the giant slot machine. I won $15 free play that I immediately gave back to the slots. But it felt good. I also stuck around after for the daily slot tournament. Fun but no winner. Do this, though, it is free and fun even if you are not a slot player. Part of me was hoping my husband lost so I did not have to hit the ATM, but he was at the final table so back to Roulette after a pit stop at the Teuscher chocolate store for more coffee and truffles. They have mini candy bars..fewer calories LOL. Roulette did not last long so I tried an Elvis slot machine to lift my spirits. Did not see these elsewhere. I hit the Elvis bonus and a video of young Elvis singing Heartbreak Hotel came on. That was worth the money I spent!

By now, my husband had won second place in his poker game..so we were off to our Chinese lunch at Venetian before our massage. Everything I got at Asain Noodle was first rate.

Canyon Ranch had a Valentine’s couple’s massage special..chocolate and whipped crème lotion. Actually smelled good. The floor and massage tables were covered in rose petals, nice touch. The service was excellent IMO, my husband was a little disappointed they did not concentrate on his problem area ( sports injury) but I think they did well for me and my tense shoulders. This place is pricey and the management was rude and not accommodating (long story that revolved around their misunderstanding), but the service itself was worth the money. Note the spa is not part of the hotel which explains the rude manager. No one employed by V was rude to us in any way.

Afterwards we planned to see the Ansel Adams exhibit but instead we opted for watching TV in our suite with our truffles. We fell asleep, waking up ½ hour before our dinner reservation at Mon Ami Gabi. It’s a 15 minute walk so we had some drama. If it was not V. Day we would have gone back to sleep but knowing we’d be hard pressed for another reservation we hoofed it. My new Jimmy Choos were broken in alright.

We arrived at Mon Ami right at 8. Of course the line was long but 5 minutes later we were seated and had a delightful meal complete with a heart shaped crème puff dessert. Further details are in the review I wrote. It was a romantic dinner.

Apres dinner it was poker time, so I headed to the roulette wheel. 17 came out everywhere but where I was, it mocked me! I quit and opted for a cocktail while watching live music, since my husband made the final table again. The band was very good and had a cute dance routine. They sang some Michael J hits. It was sweet to see newlyweds in the crowd. We saw lots of weddings today..gives me vow renewal ideas…

So my Valentine finished 5th again ( should’ve played that number) and wanted another shot at Harrah’s. Off we went. I ran out of money more quickly here and opted to hang out at the dueling piano bar. Fun, but no place to sit and my Jimmy Choos were hurting. So I sat in the sports bar area and surprise, nothing but sports was on. Not a fan I nursed a cocktail, and magically my husband appeared. The players here were pretty good, he said, he was knocked out early. So back to V for some slot action and drinks. It was nice to be “home”.

Next day we had a perfect breakfast of French Toast w. fresh berries. It was magnificent to look at and taste. The blackberries were huge! They even arrived early. Did lots of shopping, before heading home. This is the only part of the trip we were lucky. Venetian’s gift shop has a good selection of blown glass knick knacks and we found glass grapes we’d been searching for since last year. We did not gamble, wanting to leave on a good note!

Since the NBA all star weekend was closing in we arrived at the airport early and there were horrible lines getting out as well as getting inn, have not seen it that crowded. We left a little late but only had time to get a soft pretzel before leaving. Not complaining after all the eating we did this trip. Hope the next one is as good.

Overall, we were blissful doing nothing and not having to rush around trying to cram everything in, we’ll get to it in another trip. I’d stay at V again in a heartbeat.
