Family adventure - Downtown vs The Strip?

Hi Vegas Experts,

We are well travelled Australian's with two teenage daughters. We are NOT casino fans, but are super keen to see Vegas Shows like Cirque, Cabaret shows etc. We are spending 3 nights in Las Vegas in April and need advice on accommodation choices. We plan to do the 'Dig This' excavator park and the Canyon Heli Tour during our stay. The rest of the time we want to soak up the atmosphere of the city that never sleeps. We have found an excellent high rise condo Downtown but are unsure if it will provide the true Vegas experience. The prices of hotels on the Strip are freaking me out! Will we miss out if we choose to stay Downtown? Thanks in advance. Dayna D

“the city that never sleeps”

That’s New York City. :)

Stay on the Strip .

The Strip is the Las Vegas you’ve come to see.

( The helicopter trip to the “canyon” isn’t going to show you the Grand Canyon. Do some research on that part)

If you post your exact dates and nightly budget in US dollars people can make lodging suggestions.

Yes, THE STRIP--first of all much more to see.

2nd of all, DT REALLY isn't for teens...TRUST me on this.

Your uncertainty has merit. You should stay on the Strip.

Don't stay downtown with teenage girls. Some of the cheaper strip hotels that are worth checking out are The Linq, Bally's, New York New York, and TI. I would suggest a few off strip hotels that would be good and are a 5 minute Uber ride or walk: The Orleans, Tuscany, Rio, Hard Rock, Palms. They are usually a little cheaper and a few of them have free shuttles.

The strip properties seem expensive? Las Vegas is one of the most affordable for high end accommodations. I would look at Vdara or MGM Signature for condo properties with no casino.

On a budget and based on an actually great pool and the first resort geared towards families on the strip I would recommend Excalibur.

I would probably not take teenagers and stay on Freemont Street. We love going to Freemont Street one night while in Vegas, but it is definitely not a place to let teenagers run around by themselves.

Stay on the strip and there will be plenty of things to do and see. You will find lots of choices in different price ranges. Remember you Don't spend much time in the room anyway if you're sightseeing.

The only things that would be of interest to teens in that area are the Slotzilla Zip Wire (great fun) and the rides at the Stratosphere Tower. Fremont St at night will certainly be an eye opener for them so you could do the zips during the day at least.

The helicopter tour will take you to a part of the canyon that is closer to Vegas. Helicopters cant make it to the park section of the canyon due to distance. The section you will go to is not as beautiful as the park section but is still a beautiful place to see.

If your budget is tight, and it usually is,lol ,by all means consider Excalibur on the strip. Rooms are clean and service is fine. Excalibur will probably be the least expensive place to stay on the strip. Nice pool, game area, great food court and nice little shopping area. And you wont have to pay for transport to the strip from downtown. have fun.

Good advice here so far. Stay on the strip and come downtown 1 night to check it out.

Check out NYNY hotel and casino on the south end of the strip. Not central, but a decent option with kiddos in tow, I think.
