Help! Best hotel for single mom with teenagers.

After reading several travel guides that are adamant that you should NOT go to Las Vegas with kids, I indeed am planning to do that very thing. I have two teenage boys - 15 and 18. This will sound nuts - but we are interested in staying in Vegas to do a bunch of the tourist things - shows, museums. roller coasters, shopping, etc. and then would like to spend a day at the Grand Canyon and a day at Red Rock Canyon. My questions:

1. Is it crazy to go to Las Vegas if you don't even plan to gamble?

2. Hotel suggestion? Should we stay on the strip, or would we be just as happy at an Embassy Suites or something? If the hotel is sort of a destination unto itself, then my boys would probably get a kick out of it.

Thanks,

kcmom

I stayed at MGM with my DH and 16 year old son. He enjoyed it. The pool area is large, they have a good size arcade and they are in easy walking distance to NYNY, Luzor and Excalibur - all of which have plenty of things for teens to do. There is also the gameworks right next door.

Whatever you do - ahve a good trip. Mine was miserable with the DS. I suppose if it had just been him and I, it would be different. Never bring a teen along on a vacation that isnt family oriented. LOL

At 15 and 18 they will see worse stuff on MTV than LV.

What time of year are you going? What are you looking for in your hotel? Pools, restaurants, fast food, bowling.

Personally I couldn't imagine anything worse (for them) than seeing all the drinking, gambling, partying, women, ete, etc, and not being able to be part of it - depending on how mature they are for their age, they will either love laying by the pool, watching the fountains, looking at the sharks, playing in the arcade OR wish they could be gambling, partying, chatting up the woman, drinking, etc.

I can't imagine too many 15 and 18 year olds who will be interested in a museum when around them is everything they want to do, but aren't allowed..... Ouch!!

It really depends on your sons and how mature they are, if they are young for their age they will love it - if they are older than they seem they will hate it because they can't partake of any of it.

Whatever you decide, have fun.

We went several years ago with 2 daughters. We did all the walking around stuff during day.We took turns at night going downstairs to gamle a little. I too love las vegas and think it can be fun. Our daughters will be 18 and 15 next summer and we are planning to go backto celebrate graduation and hubby turning 50.. We stayed at TI, but would not do that now bacause it has changed. 2 years ago my hubby and I stayed at NYNY and thought if we went back we would stay there with the girls as we really liked the food area and area for kids, arcade, roller coaster, etc. That being said, After I found TA, I think we may go with MGM or Monte Carlo, due to the pool and lazy river areas, since we will be going in summer and MGM got TAs best pool award.Since another poster said its close to NYNY,which we really liked the food court for really cheap, good food, that may help too. Love Embasy Suites and usually stay there while traveling, but if you go to Vegas, I would do the casino/hotel, just for the experience...Have a great time.

I've been to Vegas with a 14 and a 15 year old (girls) and liked it fine. I usually go without anyone under 21, but the one time I did (with a friend and her two daughters) I had a really good time and so did they. I was actually able to see some things I haden't before.

We stayed at the Excaliber. I thought It was a very good place to stay with those under 21 (in fact perfect for that). They have a large gaming area downstairs for kids, is not too "kiddy" like circus circus, was a nice hotel, had a nice casino, and was a reasonable price. The Excaliber also has the “Tournament of Kings” Dinner Show that is very cool for all ages.

When we were all in Vegas, we went to the hoover dam and took the tour. The Grand Canyon would be very nice also. The kids enjoyed just walking up and down the strip in the evening and looking at the sights--the lights, the fountains, the volcano, etc. (and it is something I usually do just in passing, so it was really quite nice). I think I gambled for an hour and a half total one evening the entire trip.

Another cool thing that we did (for both my friend and I and her two kids) was at the Luxor (at the "Atrium"). It was their "passport" package that included the Imax theater, museum, and 3D ride combo pass at the Luxor. You get to go on some rides, see an IMax movie, go to a little museum on King Tut's tomb, etc. They also now have the Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay that is in some of the packages. My fiancee and I did the Shark Reef last year when we went (it wasn't there when I went with my friend and her daughters) and it is definately fun for everyone of all ages. The Luxor and Mandalay Bay are all connected to the Excaliber too, if you decide to stay there.

Hope that might help

Go to MGM. It's a great hotel for kids without the vomit on the carpet. Or try the Signature it's a great place to not have to be tempted with all that drinking and Gambling.

Just returned from MGM Grand with my 16 year old son. He loved it there is an arcades room in the hotel over the walkway is also the NYNY where there is a rollercoaster and arcades room and the Gamesworks is not 5mins from the hotel. As long as they are sensible enough the area is very safe for them to go to these places. Have fun !!!!!

stay on the strip, MGM is a good choice, Luxor was but is being renovated, excaliber if you want to save a little, NYNY if it is not pool time. Lots to do and see, I am sure it will be fun.

Holy cow folks, one is 18 already, they are beyond sea world.

No you're not crazy, you'll be fine as long as you stick to your 'familly' vacation plan and don't try to ditch the kids for some gambling time.

My hotel recommendations, on the strip, would be South Point or Mandalay Bay or Flamingo. Mandalay Bay and Flamingo have great pool areas. South Point has bowling alley, and movie theater.

Away from the strip, I like the Station Casino's ...try Green Valley Ranch or Red Rock Casino...both new, upscale trendy spa like atmospheres...great restaurants, and again, movie theaters and bowling lanes for the kids.
