6/5 BJ why I never win at that game anymore?

The last 2 trips to Vegas it seemed as if I simply could NOT win at BJ...a game I could play for hours and hours in trips past.

Is the change to 6/5 (as well as all the other "new" rules regarding splits, DD, soft 17, etc) the reason I just don't seem to win at BJ anymore?

Let It Ride or 3 Card poker are my table games of choice if I'm not in the poker room. I know the odds aren't as good as BJ...at least by original rules. But for some reason my $ goes much farther at these games now.

I doesn't help! The 6/5 rule and the others, like hitting a soft 17, add over 1% to the house edge. So regular rules, 3/2 BJ, played perfectly by the book, has an edge of less than 1%. Add the new rules and you are now over 2%. You've doubled the house edge.

But note that 6/5 BJ will usually still have a lower house edge than Let It Ride(around 3%) and 3 Card Poker(anywhere from 3% to 7%, depending on pay tables). Many BJ players, myself included, boycott 6/5 as much as possible. But I'm sure we're fighting a losing battle. The casinos want more revenue, and there are more than enough people who are willing to play the worse rules.

If you play Blackjack Switch at Casino Royale you'll be playing at just a 0.18% loss expectation. You play 2 hands at $5 minimums and can "switch" the second cards if doing so is beneficial. Tropicana and Harrah's also offer this game, at higher advantages for the casino, but both still far better than any 6/5 table.

It is not likely a question of the specific game rules effecting your outcomes....

The correct range of outcome odds quoted by others are based on basically an "infinite" number of hands being played to be actualized.

The variance of your few outcomes as a single, occasional player provide a statistically insignificant sample, and they fall well within the accepted trending for any given player without minor rules changing being a meaningful factor.

Sure a coin when tossed a couple hundred million times should end up with a close to 50/50 ratio of heads to tails. But it doesn't go head, then tail, then head, then tail, etc. the result runs in "streaks". Your recent losses are just a minor blip of "tails" within the larger scheme of things.

Of course, that does not mean you should play at tables with less than optimum rules as the goal is to maximize your chances of winning. And, for goodness sake, bail on the 6/5 games.
